Blog Guelph: Downtown Perspective
Sandra Regina provides us with this cityscape view taken from the tippy top of MacDonnell Street at the foot of the Church of Our Lady. Most Guelphites see the opposite perspective but as you can see, this view provides quite the vista of our downtown and beyond.

Speaking of water here we have a rather interesting perspective of the traditional Family Statue fountain combo that resides in St. Georges Square in the downtown. The water in this fountain is as much art as the statue itself.

Blog Guelph: Communityfests

Neighbourhood group festivals are a fine way of creating a closeknit community. We had our annual Orange Skies Festival on the weekend. Dozens of folks from our street and environs came together to share a seasonal feast, conversation and talent.
Besides being entertained by the delightful "Girls With Chairs" our fancy was tickled by magician Benjamin Caesar. Josh McGee, Aimee Charbonneau and Tannis Slimmon offered their outstanding musical talent in an intimate 'round the picnic table' setting.
Upcoming fests as reported by our darling paper, the Guelph Tribune include: Grange Hill East Summerfest 2006, September 3, O'Connor Lane Park from 3 pm to dusk; Parkwood Gardens Neighbourhood hosts the 10th Annual Summer BBQ at Springdale Park, September 4, 11:30 tot 2:30; Kortright Hills Community Country Hoedown, September 9, 11am to 3:30pm at Kortright Hill School and Picnic in Exhibition Park takes place on September 17, from 1 to 5.

Blog Guelph: Sign of Our Future

Upon arriving back in Guelph after a nomadic holiday, I was surprised to see these signs on people's lawns. I had no idea that the Pipe From Lake Erie was anything more than a "pipe dream/nightmare" used as a political tool in our last municipal election.
Silly, silly me.
According to the information on www.stopthepipeline.ca website, public consultation meetings took place during the sleepy month of August and none were held in Guelph.

Blog Guelph: Signs of September

As August ticks to an end, schools around the city are being prepared for the beginning of the academic year. In fact, with thousands of university students making their way to the University of Guelph from across the country and around the world, the entire city is gearing up.
The University of Guelph ranks very high as far as learning institutions in the country. According to the recent Maclean's Magazine survey "Guelph was No. 1 among comprehensive universities in seven of the eight categories that make up the magazine’s new University Graduate Survey."
I wonder if seat 162 is part of the Sudoku of Seating?

Blog Guelph: Inside Blog Guelph
Back in early August, a small group of photo nuts meet at the Albion for a face to face, beer drinking, photo swapping good old time also known as Guelph's First Flickr Meet.
Blogger/photographer VW_Busman cooked up the idea and told Flickr.....the photo hosting site that Blog Guelph relies on. Upon VW's arrival, he laid some nifty Flickr swag stickers and buttons out for the gang. Here we see Blairware’s photo of a Flickr button resting on the head of a beer.
How friggin fun is that?!
If you're keen to contribute to Blog Guelph but have yet to figure out the complex system for having your photos appear, allow me to reveal the process.
Start by setting up an account with Flickr. Upload your digital photos. Tag the Guelph shots 'Guelph'. Then, go to Groups and join the one called 'Guelph'. You can read the various strings, throw your two cents worth into the conversation or just lurk around. After you upload your pictures and tag them, send them to the Guelph group. If the 'blog this' toggle doesn't appear over your images, we'll sort that out directly.
That's the full deal. Me or someone filling in for me will cruise the shots and post one or more a day with a wee commentary. Then we'll link back to you and leave a comment on your site.
Simple like sunshine don't you think?
Of course it would also be spectacular if you told everyone you knew about Blog Guelph. Even more stupendous would be getting a link from your website or blog to us. And triple fun arrives if you are a Guelphite and have a blog.....cause we'll add you to the blogroll on the right hand side.
Our purpose is fairly straightforward. My dear friend Henry Kock used to say if you want to see positive stuff go on in your community, you've got to make the process beautiful. Following this logic along, me thinks the more people engaged in 'making it beautiful' the more beautiful we'll be.
Blog Guelph wants to capture this cities beauty and encourage more of it. Guelph is our home after all.
We're also looking for sponsors and advertisers for the site. Even though this is an arty farty Art Jam project, it does take time and we do like to eat. Contact details are on the right hand side bar.

Blog Guelph: Tomatoes
Here we have what I believe should be called the August sandwich. Green thumbed folks all over Guelph can wander out into their own back yards and pick the fixings for this culinary delight. But, if gardening is not your forte, local CSA organic farms (community supported agriculture) like the on at the Ignatius Jesuit Centre of Guelph or Fourfold Farms (fourfold@golden.net) provide weekly produce pickups for members.
Beyond that, fresh produce stands and mini markets like Knapps Country Market out by Guelph Lake have everything you need.

Blog Guelph: Its a Bell
The Bell Piano and Organ Co. has a rich history and for a lot of people put Guelph (and even Canada) on the map.
Long before Canada was ever Canada — 1864 (it was called West Canada back then) brothers William and Robert Bell, with a staff of three, produced 25 four-legged 'Diploma' melodeons (a traditional English instrument). By 1881 nearly 200 employees produced annually over 1200 melodeons and reed organs, some of which were exported as far as Australia. In 1888 The company was sold to an English firm, at which time the name was changed to the Bell Organ and Piano Co, Ltd, and the manufacture of pianos was begun. The company's production reached 600 reed organs and 200 pianos per month. Bell pianos were exported extensively, and some of the handsomer models were sent to the palaces of Queen Victoria, Queen Frederica, the kings of Italy and Spain, and a Turkish sultan.
When piano sales out-stripped organ sales and seemed likely to continue doing so, the company in 1907 changed its name to the Bell Piano and Organ Co, Ltd. Agencies were established across Canada (one of which, in Toronto, became in 1913 a separate organization - the Bell Music and Piano Co - and also sold records, phonographs, and sheet music). A trade magazine was published in the years before 1913. By 1920 the company had begun to produce player pianos, electric reproducing pianos, phonographs, piano benches, radio tables, and cabinets. Over 170,000 pianos and organs had been built by 1928, when the company was sold to a syndicate headed by John S. Dowling of Brantford, Ont. The manufacture of organs was discontinued and the company renamed Bell Pianos Ltd. In 1934 the company was sold to Lesage Pianos, which perpetuated the Bell design.
The Bell Organ and Piano Co. once occupied most of the block bounded by Wyndham, Carden and Macdonnell Streets. Please visit the City of Guelph Library to learn more about the Bell Organ and Piano Co.

Blog Guelph: Macdonnell Street
Acker's Furniture spans the width of a city block with two entrances, one on Carden Street and this one on Macdonnell. The business has been operating in this location since before sliced bread. For the more literal among you Ackers opened in 1917.
If you’re looking for something to do, I recommend a trip to the upper floors of this very large Guelph landmark. The vintage red convertible is not part of their marketing campaign but it speaks well to the experience awaiting you inside.

It was the roar of the crowd that drew me to the top end of Exhibition Park last night. Despite living in Guelph for 25 years and liking baseball, I had never watched a game in the nicely designed Hastings Stadium. Now with the Midget Girls Canadian Fastpitch Tournament in full swing, my inaugural visit was perfectly timed.
What a delightful summer treat for a fine August evening. The mixed age, large crowd was very friendly and most enthusiastic despite the home teams excellent effort to bring in a run.

Blog Guelph: Wading Cow
Thanks to the prominence of the University of Guelph and its focus on agricultural studies, Guelph is sometimes referred to as Cow town.
Here we have a Guelph area cow skinny-dipping in a stream. As the photographer corbeau du nord points out in their notes on this photos Flickr homepage, cows wading in streams may seem quaint but in fact are nasty polluting machines. When they've 'gotta go, go they do'. Upstream folks do not suffer the consequence. But the downstream crowds get an unfortunate reduction in water quality.
I trust you get the picture.
