All week I've been plying you with photos taken of our lovely Church of Our Lady by various Guelphite's and friends. I've also offered information about the on going fate of the Loretta Convent.
Here's the Convent with a Church of Our Lady tower in the background.

Blog Guelph: Loretta Convent - Front
Back in July 2004, I wrote an editorial for the Guelph Mercury that pretty much sums up my thoughts on our current city politicians and their stance on Guelph's heritage buildings.
The Loretta Convent situation had my socks in a knot even then.
You can flashback to my diatribe here.

Blog Guelph: Church of Our Lady - Foggy
Catholic Hill has the potential of being a fabulous tourist draw for Guelph. As you can see by the series of photos I posted yesterday and again today, Our Lady does present nicely from many different angles, styles of lighting and weather conditions.
Coincidentally, the excellent Guelph Tribune ran a front-page story in yesterday's paper about future development of the Loretta Convent, a stunning historic building that sits beside the church.
In the opening paragraph, Virginia McDonald reports that, "The Loretto Convent is "the best available option" for an expanded civic museum, says the Guelph Museums board's final report to the city." Check out the rest of the Trib story here.
For the fleshed out history behind the museum report, please read through yesterday's posts on Blog Guelph.

Blog Guelph: Church of Our Lady - Rear View
As I drove out of town towards Fergus yesterday, I was struck by this realization about the big box development in our north end.
There are over 8,000 photographs of Guelph published on the web based photo site Flickr. After spending the last six months monitoring the daily photo uploads and digging through the archives, it would appear that no one with a camera thinks that the *Smart Centre* development, nor any of the other sprawl type scenes unfolding in Guelph deserve to be included in that enormous set of images.
Instead, people take thousands of photos of our historic buildings and beautiful river lined parks.

Blog Guelph: Church of Our Lady - Front
If I am to draw a conclusion regarding the number of photos posted on Flickr, the Church of Our Lady is the most photogenic landmark in our city.
When talk started circulating about the possibility of Guelph's Civic Museum taking up residence in the now empty Loretto Convent situated beside the church and built between 1854-57, Guelph's Catholic Hill had the exciting potential of becoming an enormous tourist draw.
But a funny thing has happened in the three years since this idea has been rolling around......

Blog Guelph: Church of Our Lady - Looming
Since our last municipal election in November 2003, very little effort has been directed towards capitalizing on or enhancing our most recognizable landmark by preserving the The Loretto Convent.
When elected city officials suggested demolishing the convent, citizens roared. Rather than bringing in the wrecking ball, a Task Force was established to study the situation and make recommendations for the future of Loretto Convent. Guelphites crossed their fingers.

The Task Force finalized their report on The Loretto Convent's future in March of 2006. The entire report can be found here.
I noted that the recommendation section of the Task Force report starts off with this paragraph.
"The lands and buildings of Catholic Hill are owned by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Hamilton. Ultimate responsibility for the use and development of these facilities must remain the purview of the Diocese. Development of the site will depend on the right opportunity being available at the right time, suggesting that patience will be a virtue. At the same time, the Council of the City of Guelph is a key driver in the overall economic health of the community. It is clear to the Task Force that preservation of heritage buildings is an increasingly important dimension of a vibrant City."

So far, our elected officials have reported no action on the Loretto Task Force Recommendations. One theory suggests that our city mother's and father's are trying out the passive “demolished by neglect,” approach, a phrase coined by London, Ontario city heritage planner Christine Nelson.
According to Nelson, “The easiest thing to do that’s non-confrontational is to leave a building empty, turn off the lights and heat and pretty soon it’s going to be unsafe and too expensive to repair”.

Guelphites will be asked to go to the polls on November 13th to determine who will be running our city for the next four years.
In my mind, this is important stuff. Think garbage, water, sprawl and traffic.... that's the job of local government.
Unfortunately, 64% of the eligible voters in our city DID NOT bother to cast their vote in our last election. As a result of this somewhat disturbing percentage, the Guelph Civic League was born. One of their stated goals is to increase the percentage of voting public to at least 50%.
Their website is pretty darn comprehensive. In fact, they even provide a page of candidate names and contacts currently registered in the race.

Stones from the front of the building were kept for reconstruction of a façade in the parkland in front of River Run."

According to photographer Corbeau du nord, this is a statue of Queen Victoria, located at the University of Guelph Arboretum . Her un-amused expression could be a reflection of just about anything. Our weather is balmy but quite grey today. The world news is as grim as usual. Or perhaps being cast in aluminum and tucked away in a garden at the Arboretum has got her knickers in a knot.
Nonetheless, never under estimate the power of your face value.

Blog Guelph: Sign of Falling
This weekend, a distinct chill arrived in Guelph with all the promises that come with the changing season. I tend to think 'studio tours, arts festivals and sweaters', but some folks see fall as a time of yard work and winter preparation.
Although Blairware took this shot during the sultry heat of summer, the leaf rake will make its annual debut, possibly in your yard, over the next few weeks. With the current wet garbage situation in our city, you may be wise to compost your own garden waste this year.

Blog Guelph: Guelph Jazz Festival

How lucky for Blog Guelph and Jazz loving Guelphites (or non-Guelphites) everywhere. Jazz guy Tim Posgate has posted this promise on his blog.
"I am going to focus on previewing and reporting live from the Guelph Jazz Festival for the next five days. Usually in this space you can count on a stream of consciousness type journal ranging from kids to hockey to music, music and more music. I will try to "keep with the program" until the festival is over.(hopefully as the weekend progresses I will have some recorded interviews on my podcast.)"
Tim's Blog can be found here.
This weekends Jazz Festival schedule is here.

Blog Guelph: Eden Mills Writers' Festival

If you like the idea of sitting on a blanket in a beautiful country setting, listening to an author read to you, then the Eden Mills Writers' Festival may be your cup of tea.
For added pleasure, publishers and independent writers set up along the narrow main drag and sell their latest titles direct to you. Gareth Lind will be on hand hawking his wares. And I'll be right beside him selling 2007 Breast of Canada calendars.
There's tasty food and cool live tunes to help round out the day.
Go here for complete festival details.

Blog Guelph: Planet Bean
Planet Bean has roasted fresh, fair trade, organic coffee beans at their downtown location on Macdonell Street for a few year's now. Thanks to surging popularity, the worker co-op company will soon be moving their roasting operation to a larger location over on the east side of town.
Worry not. You'll still be able to purchase your beans and fresh steaming joe from their second Macdonell location.
Thanks to TheGiantVermin for providing this posts pic.

Blog Guelph: Orientation Week
Swarms of University students are filling our city as I type. Here we see a group of orientation volunteers out on Johnston Field getting charged up with good vibe so that they can help orient new students through their first few weeks.
T'is an emotionally charged time for many new students thanks to the plethora of 'firsts' being experienced. Hopefully these cool blue cats will help make the transition from home-life to campus easier for the freshman/women.

Blog Guelph: Give Me Five
In 1983 the Macdonald Stewart Art Centre grounds were developed into the Donald Forster Sculpture Park to be used for permanently sited sculptures. This charming bronze works by Carl Skelton called Begging Bear is prominently featured beside the bus stop on Gordon Street in front of the Centre.
Begging Bear serves as a Greeter of students for U of Goo.

Every Saturday morning from 7am until noon, the Guelph Farmer's Market opens the doors to swarms of Guelphites, their friends and visitors. You can make purchases directly with the farmers/growers/makers of all manner of produce, meats, cheeses, crafts and ready-to-eat specialty foods.

Blog Guelph: Blacksmith Fountain
If you walk down MacDonnell Street past the Cooperators toward the Speed River, you will find this colourful statue fountain combo tucked into Priory Park on your left hand side.
J.B. Armstrong, the owner of a large carriage factory in town, donated The Blacksmith Fountain to the City in 1884. After 38 years of living in St. George's Square, the fountain was moved to its present location.
Perhaps more owners of large Guelph factories would like to commission public art for Guelphites to admire.
Thanks to dezso for this excellent photo.
