Blog Guelph: Covered Bridge Face
Guelph's Lattice Covered Footbridge was built in June 1992 near the junction of the Speed and Eramosa Rivers by 400 timberframers who were gathered in Guelph from all across North America.
Let me repeat that. Four hundred people came to Guelph to volunteer their time and build us a bridge because it's what they like to do.
Based on an original design from the 1800s, it is one of only two in all of Ontario.

Blog Guelph: Heffernan Street Foot Bridge
The lovely downtown Heffernan Street Footbridge was built in 1914. Accessible at the pedestrian crossing in front of St. George's Church, the open spandrel arch bridge deposits users across the Speed River at Heffernan and Arthur Street.

Blog Guelph: Foggy Bridge
In 1991, the bridge got a serious facelift. According to info I found on the
consulting teams website (Gamsby and Mannerow Limited), "the original structure was deteriorated beyond remedial rehabilitation and therefore the superstructure was rebuilt to original dimensions. One section was precast at the site to span existing railroad tracks."
Total Project Cost: $850,000 in 1991 dollars.

Blog Guelph: Bridging the Gap
I don't recall hearing any outrage over spending $850,000.00 'hard earned taxpayers dollars' on something as frivolous as a walking bridge". But I suspect that perspective would exist. There have and will always be spendthrifts among us.

Blog Guelph: Bridge Over Foggy Water
If we step back in time to 1991 and imagine a different attitude - one where our tax dollars were earmarked for anything BUT heritage, this bridge would likely not be standing. And these photos, taken between October 6 and 10th, would not have been possible.
History is not over. We make it every day.

Blog Guelph: Guelph Lake
Ideally, water should be protected at the source. According to the Source Water Protection website, "the proposed Clean Water Act would play a major role in ensuring that all Ontarians have access to safe drinking water. Protecting water at its source is the first step in ensuring safe drinking water. It means stopping contaminants from getting into sources of drinking water -- lakes, rivers and aquifers."

Blog Guelph: Water and Your Family
The Guelph Civic League have posted an excellent article on their website about how we can save both water and money. They also offer a condensed history of our current elected officials water-managing prowess.
We all know about the three R's with REDUCE being number one. Unfortunately, the majority of our current city council don't subscribe to the RRR belief. They slashed the water conservation education budget despite the understood wisdom of conservation.
According to GCL, "while leading municipalities across the world and throughout North America are learning that conservation investments pay tremendous dividends in avoided taxes, the Quarrie majority in Guelph cut the Guelph conservation budget in 2005/2006. Previous conservation work was extremely successful. As the city has grown - adding more people and businesses - average daily water consumption has flat-lined. That means as a whole we have been successful using less to do the same thing. We should be investing more in conservation, not less."
Go here to check out the full article.
Then mark your November 13th election on your calendar.

Blog Guelph: The University of Guelph
The energy of the University of Guelph provides much in the way of quality of life to city life. According to the website, the main campus spans 1,017 acres (412 hectares), including a 408 acre (165 hectare) arboretum and a 30 acre (12 hectare) research park. Grand old buildings punctuate the beautifully landscaped grounds and gracefully intermingle with newer structures.

Take the university library for instance. For $20.00, any adult living in the province may register as a community borrower with the University of Guelph Library. Find out more about this great resource at this link.

Blog Guelph: Down The Drain?
I subscribe to both the Guelph Mercury and The Guelph Tribune. As a daily reader of local news, the impression I get is that most citizens’ think that the quality of life in Guelph is going down the drain. Drinking water, sprawling growth and garbage woes top the list of concerns.
From a government perspective, all three of these issues fall under our local municipality government’s mandate.
Our next municipal election is November 13. By voting you accept your opportunity and responsibility to have a say about things that directly effect your life. Fortunately there are some excellent people running for office this term. And yes there are some who are not the sharpest knives in the draw. Your job is to determine the difference.

Blog Guelph: Learning
One of the most important resources we have is our own prior knowledge. If we can learn from our own experience our life course will be easier. Second to this and as effective is learning from other people's experience. Our history can teach us much if, but only if we are willing to accept that we may not know everything and that other people may have valuable information to share.
Citizen delegations that make presentations at city hall are such a resource. Our city is filled with folks that have world-class expertise on a plethora of subjects, many of whom are willing to share that knowledge through public delegations.
On November 13th, we will elect 12 councilors and one mayor. The Guelph Civic League is dedicated to helping you sort out the issues and learn about the values and expertise of the candidates. Each candidate has been asked to provide contact information. The list is posted on this site.
Try this. Ask the candidates in your ward about their thoughts on public delegations. Have they learned from their constituents? Do they appreciate the diversity of voices? Are they willing to listen to you?

Blog Guelph: What About Now?
All the Guelphites that are 78 year's old and older must be flocking to the bus station (where this machine was photographed) for the good ole taste of 1928. Obviously no one any younger would have a clue given they weren't around for the taste sensation.
According to a story that appeared in the Guelph Mercury on October 2, about the age of our population and public servants, "Most Guelphites are in the 35 to 39 age group, according to Statistics Canada. The average age of the eight (city) councillors who provided demographic information in a survey from the Mercury is about 65."
While it's wise to allow our history to be a guide and to use prior knowledge, it is also important to have people in public office who reflect the life stage of constituents. At the very least, they need to keep in step. Otherwise our future is in shaky hands and we're stuck chewing on the past.

Blog Guelph: Breast of Canada Launch and Avant Breast Auction Gals
The sixth annual Breast of Canada calendar launch, held on Friday night at the Youth Music Centre was a stunning success. Auction coordinator Jen Turnbull (left) acquired a fine range of breast related art while the lovely and wonderfully talented Stacey Hare (right) from Roger's First Local did an outstanding job as auctioneer. A total of $1980.00 was raised for the Canadian Breast Cancer network.
All and all, the breast calendars were launched rather nicely. Thanks goes out to every single person in attendance in body and spirit,
