Blog Guelph: City Silhouette
Each morning I surf on over to the Flickr website to see the selection of images that Guelphites have captured in the last twenty-four hours. Currently we have 80 people registered to the Guelph group. The number seems to increase daily.
Many of the photographers are prolific. Others place only a few photos up on the public forum at a time. And of course there's a variety of approaches between these two extremes.
Today's series of photos are all taken by one photographer between November 21 and November 27. Cinnamon Gurl has a distinct eye for line and colour not to mention strange wording on city signs. She's also a regular blogger at Write About Here.
I hope you enjoy Guelph through Cinnamon Gurls eyes. Click her pics to see her full photo stream.

Blog Guelph: Canadian National Locomotive 6167
The Guelph Mercury ran an excellent feature on Locomotive 6167 in the Here Section of Saturday's paper.
According to the story, there are only six engines of this kind left in Canada. Built in Montreal, 6167 was completed on March 29, 1940.
Guelph became the retirement home for 6167 nearly forty years ago. It currently sits on the east side of the downtown bus station.
If you have Insider status with the Mercury, click here to read the full story.

Preserving our historical heritage always costs money. In my view, we are a rich enough community to undertake such projects. Besides, the pay back is always greater than the payout. Blog Guelph: Special Interest Groups
Over the course of my twenty five years as a resident in the city of Guelph, I've heard a million negative references to 'Special Interest Groups' by the powers that were. As a member of several dozen of these dreaded collectives I often wondered why my interest and ability to focus in on the details of our community weren't valued. After all, beauty is in the details - or so we're told.

Besides having a 'special interest' photography vaneramos clearly loves our natural environment. This is the Eramosa River.

During this most sweeping change in our municipal political landscape, it would appear that a number of 'special interest groups' came together with a unified special interest - to vote in a council that respected their perspective, contribution and needs.
Take this statistic for example. Ward Five is home to many of our 'very special and interesting' student population.
2003 election, votes cast in ward 5: 6908
2006 election, votes cast in ward 5: 11764

CNR Engine 6167 sits by the bus station downtown. And guess what. There is a 'group' currently trying to raise funds to restore this historic beast to its former glory.
According to GuelphArts.ca "the Locomotive 6167 Restoration Committee was formed in 2003 by Guelph City Council. The Committee consists of 4 members selected by City Council from interested members of Guelph, 1 member of a City of Guelph Board, and 2 members of Guelph City staff."
Don't misunderstand. I'm all for this group. But I ask you - what's the difference between "interested members of Guelph" liking old trains and an old train "special interest group"?

Election results are still being reported as unofficial on the Guelph city website. I suspect Ward One can expect a recount with only one vote separating second place Kathleen Farrelly from third place incumbent Laura Baily. Still, after much 'pinch me am I dreaming' frenzy at the very well attended River Run Centre last night, the results of the 2006 municipal election can be summed up in one word for a great many Guelphites.
Sweet.

Blog Guelph: If Dogs Could Vote
Rudy has had it with people who spray pesticides on their lawns. Not only is he unable to read the stupid little warning signs, his instincts gets in the way and he's obliged to lift his leg and mark the suckers.
The The Guelph Civic League have this to report on Guelph's pesticide issue.
"The current city council in Guelph has not acted on pesticide reductions. The issue has been ignored, despite council's approval of a bylaw in March of 2005 that would restrict pesticide application on residential, commercial, and industrial land under certain climatic conditions, especially smog days when spraying is even more of a health threat. Council also agreed to consider a pesticide advisory group for a two-year term and to fund up to $60,000 for a program to educate citizens about reducing pesticide use and exposure. None of these measures has been taken."
Today is election day in Guelph. If you have a pet, cast a vote in their direction. Vote for a candidate who supports pesticide reduction in our community.

Blog Guelph: Remember In Flanders Fields
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Gow's Bridge was built l897 and named after Peter Gow, a prominent local politician and mill owner. According to various accounts, Mr. Gow operated a tannery and produced shoes.
Peter Gow also led a very politically active life in Guelph. Besides serving on the school board and the town council, he became Reeve in 1857 and served as Mayor in 1866 and 1867.
Is it any wonder the man got a bridge named after him?

Blog Guelph: Old Growth Forest
This tree does not live in Guelph. But if Bill Barrett has his way, an entire old growth forest could be part of our cities legacy. And you can easily be involved.
Today marks the official launch of the Old Growth Forest Project.
According to the new website, "endless forests once covered southern Ontario in a tapestry of maples, oaks, elms and cedars. Today, more then 99 per cent of that old growth has disappeared, replaced by a clear-cut that stretches across the province."
"The Old Growth Forest project will bring a piece of that original forest back to life on the grounds of Ignatius Jesuit Centre, just north of Guelph's city limits."
"There's no doubt that it's an ambitious plan. Like the medieval cathedrals of Europe, the Pyramids, or the Great Wall of China, this project will take generations to complete. But 500 years from now, Guelph will offer a magnificent example of wilderness and urban life, flourishing side by side. "
Ambitious indeed. Magnificently so.
