Blog Guelph: Goldie Mill
Today's series of six photos focus on Goldie Mill.
Located on the banks of the Speed River, just off Cardigan Street and Norwich, Goldie Mill has lead a varied life in our community that has span 178 years.

Blog Guelph: Goldie Mill Then
In 1864, the mill was destroyed by fire. The same year, the Goldie family purchased the burnt out ruins and rebuilt the mill.

Blog Guelph: Sunset on Goldie Mill
Mill operations ceased in the 1930's and Goldies operated as a warehouse until 1953 when fire once again destroyed the location.
When the ruins were threatened to be flattened into a parking lot - suddenly a Joni Mitchell song is running through my mind - the Grand River Conservation Authority purchased the ruins in 1976. Several groups worked to stabalized the ruins and have the location designated as a public park.

Blog Guelph: Goldie Mill Today
And so, the mill continues to add value to our community.
Currently it may be reserved for performances or other events like weddings, film nights, art events and lectures. A projection screen and hydro is available. The main area inside the walls will hold up to 160 persons. There are two other smaller defined spaces as well. Public washrooms are available at 75 Cardigan Street, adjacent to the Mill. Important to note - the mill has no roof.

Blog Guelph: Permanent Vs. Temporary
One of the comments that came up at the Community by Design event on Saturday was the difference between building something with an intent that it be permanent versus temporary.
Permanent structures add value to a community in both the present moment and far into the future. Even though the mill was ravaged by fire twice, the quality of the stonework with stood the passage of time. Now imagine a similar situation happening to a big box store.

Blog Guelph: Goldie Mill - Big Idea?
Obviously someone had a big idea for Goldie Mill that was somewhat more inspired than 'must build parking lot'. Plus a whack of somebodies had the energy and resources to take a ruins and turn it into a historic gem, public park and nice chunk of cultural capital for the City of Guelph.
Let us say thank you to the visionaries who saw - then moved this project forward.

Blog Guelph: My Big Idea
I'm starting the week off with a series of Big Ideas.
At Saturday's Communities By Design Discussion at the River Run Centre, participants - perhaps 400 plus Guelphites - contributed their Big Ideas for Guelph on these recipe sized blue cards, then displayed them for all to see. This is Downtown Lynn's Big Idea(s).

Blog Guelph: River Run Centre
Big Ideas are the easy part. Successful implemention is the real meal deal.
Our community had a Big Idea when it decided to create a performing arts centre. The implementation of this idea took a heroic effort over many years.
From the River Run Website: "River Run Centre was built with funding from the City of Guelph, Government of Ontario, Government of Canada, and from more than 1,400 companies, foundations and individuals under the leadership of fundraiser Doug Bridge. The cost to build the centre was close to $15 million. River Run Centre is owned by the City of Guelph and managed under the auspices of the River Run Centre Board of Directors."

I've just finished my short but meaningful stint as Ambassador for Project Porchlight - delivering free compact fluorescent bulbs to homes in my neighbourhood.
Apparently these twisted little gems use 75% less energy than regular bulbs which translates into a $50.00 saving on your hydro bill over the life of the bulb.

Blog Guelph: Love Guelph
Today's six post series is dedicated to my last twenty four hours in Guelph.
Yesterday was Valentine's Day - and David Suzuki came to town on his "If I Were Prime Minister Tour" . Over 500 people atended - including Mayor Karen Farbridge - the Guelph International Resource Centres' sold out talk.
Dr. Suzuki's first request was for you, me and at least 1 million people to join his Nature Challenge. A quarter million people already have. With a cool million, he'll have some very compelling leverage to use with our political leaders.

Even though the future is only in our mind, let's pretend it's 2030. Now ask yourself these two questions.
1. What would you like Guelph to look like in 2030?
2. What do we need to do now to facilitate this vision?

Blog Guelph: Noon Hour Concert
It's been a while since I attended a U of Goo Noon Concert at me old Alma Mater. And what a treat this was - both musically and socially. The audience was thick with our arts community leaders and players.
Zaki Ibrahim - a stunning singer started the show followed by Mali born Vieux Farka Toure and his band. At one point University Prez Alastair Summerlee (and blogger) walked through the courtyard, with his freshly purchased Centre Six lunch - beaming as he scanned the muliticultural audience of students, staff, alumni and regular Guelphites.

This afternoon I attended a visitation for Nicholas Lambden, the 10 year old city boy that died after accidently being struck in the head by a puck while playing hockey - his passion - at St. George's Park community rink.

In keeping with the 2030 vision of Guelph exercise, we've got some serious water issues boiling up in our city that will require some Ryder dog dedication from you and me.
Fortunately for us, Dr. Mark Goldberg, an eminent Guelph toxicologist is championing Guelph's water cause.
Being a rather BIG FAN OF WATER, I asked Mark how I could help.
He told me there is more than one issue. Then he urged me to read this report from our city staff.

Remember Art On The Street in downtown Guelph last summer? Well organizers are now gearing up for the 5th annual. If you'd like to take part in the multi-disciplinary arts exhibition and sale presented in a festival atmosphere in Downtown Guelph then go here and get yourself an application.

"On Tuesday, February 27, 2007, 7 to 9:30 p.m., The Writing Life: Making It Work will take place in the Guelph Artrs Council Meeting Room. The evening will take the form of a panel discussion featuring members of the Guelph PWAC chapter who will give four different takes on how to make writing a viable part of one's working life. It promises to be a tell-all evening packed with advice from the trenches. Questions will be welcomed."

Blog Guelph: Icicles
Today's series of photos is intended to illustrate what minus 11C looks like - the current and somewhat consistent temperature that we are enjoying in Guelph at the moment.
Actually, this is not true. When you factor in the wind chill, it really feels like minus 21C.
I have never heard of anyone being speared by icicles, but I can image that should this cluster fall on your head, the scene would not be pretty.

You may have noticed that I have added a - Now Accepting Blog Guelph Volunteer Monthly Subscriptions, Any Amount Welcome, Click The Button To Donate - thingy at the top of the left hand side bar.
Here's my theory.
If you like visiting Blog Guelph on a daily, weekly or monthly basis and would like to help me offset my costs of running the joint, then perhaps you'd be willing to subscribe. I'm posting about 100 photos a month, plus dishing up some pertinent Guelph info and promoting a slew of our creative types - particularly our image makers and bloggers.
I am a self designated cheerleader of all things Guelph.
I'm thinking a modest $2.00 a month would be fair. Of course this idea is voluntary and a bit of an experiment and you will still be able to stop by without contributing.
The Donate Button leads to the secure PayPal site and my Art Jam account. I'll mention this a couple times a month for the next while and see how it goes. Your feedback will be most welcome.

Blog Guelph: Guelph Glow
Today's series of photos is not really a series. It's more of a dogs breakfast of images that caught my eye. That's pretty much all I can tell you - except to say that there are no end of great Gruelph photos that catch my eye.
You've likely noticed how prolific photographer Dezso is if you've been following along the ole Blog Guelph trail. But I suspect you haven't noticed the latest feature to hit Blog Guelph's platform.
I can now label each post with tags that will help to file the images of this blog. With almost 700 posts to wade through, this will take some time to get everything labeled. But for now, I'd like to give you a taste of this fun new feature.

Blog Guelph: Mighty Poseiden
I realize that if you're not from Guelph, you will find this image somewhat strange. I mean what would a small agricultural centre, landlocked in the middle of Ontario, sometimes known as Cow Town, have in common with a big honking Poseiden?
Here's my answer.
Guelph is home to the incredible Bernardi Precast Factory. I can only assume that the Italian heritage of the owners and concrete workers who whip up these massive hunks of art play a significant role in what gets created.

Guelph Mercury reporter Scott Tracey is covering the Ontario Court of Appeal's hearing into the 1959 murder conviction of Steven Truscott. Steven, as you may or may not know, is a Guelph resident.

Blog Guelph: Snow - Get's In Your Eyes
My apology to those of you wondering if Blog Guelph froze in its tracks for the last week. While changing blog platforms, we got bugs in the software and I simply could not publish!
But we're back in biz - and Guelph photographer's have been hard at it - despite the extreme cold and blustery weather.
Today's series takes a look at the myriad ways that snow moulds to the landscape and everything in it.
