Blog Guelph: Daily Dose of Guelph

~ For more images by The Giant Vermin, please click the pic and visit their Flickr account or click on their Blog Guelph Label.

In a former life, I lived in a small, rural town of 1700 with a weekly newspaper that really had to scrape for news. Great gossipy columns would be dedicated to the out of town guests at Merle and Edna's Sunday dinner, who's dog had puppies or just what body part was acting up on the most newly admitted person to the local hospital.

Today's series of 6 posts is kind of like that.

We'll start with the horn tooting headlines.

BLOG GUELPH RANKS NUMBER ONE IN THE

Aussiejourno’s Weekly Blog Awards

Blog Guelph has been in the top ten of these awards for about a month - which was cool enough for me. Now - well - geez, we've gotten the big nod!

I'd like to thank David McMahon for starting the awards in the first place and Joel for working so hard as this weeks judge. And of course where would Blog Guelph be without the zillions of terrific photographer's!

Photo-less - that's where.

Blog Guelph: Tap Water Gets Sexy

~ For more images by EyeFocus, please click the pic and visit their Flickr account or click on their Blog Guelph Label.

Thanks to the controversy that's brewing over our drinking water, Guelph tap water is seeing a resurgence of popularity.

Comment One: I refused my first plastic bottle of water on Saturday night. Instead I got a glass and drank from the tap.

Comment Two: It was so liberating. Not a plastic bottle anywhere. We just drank water straight from the tap - and it tasted so good.

Blog Guelph: Guelph Contemporary Dance Festival

Photo Credit: Randy Sutherland ~ For more images by this photographer, please click this link and visit his photo blog.

This Sunday is International Dance Day - a timely and wonderful reminder that dance is an ancient form of expression rooted in community celebration and that Guelph has an entire festival dedicated to this wonderful fusion of mind and body.

With only a month to go, now would be an excellent time to get your tickets for the upcoming Guelph Contemporary Dance Festival - slated for May 31 - June 3. There's an incredible selection of both ticketed and complimentary events to enjoy in various venues around the city including Exhibition Park and St. George's Square downtown.

And I'm told that this year’s festival is dedicated to children, an idea whose day has finally come, according to the Guelph Contemporary Dance Festival. “Our festival is very child-friendly: : Fully half of our performances take place in parks and in public squares, places where children don’t have to contain their exuberance and their genuine fascination with the beauty and rhythm of dance,” comments artistic director, Catrina von Radecki.

Check out the festival website for the line up, then get out your calendar. Trust me - if you want to be uplifted, you really want to catch as much of the festival as your time will permit.

Blog Guelph: The Pagani Style

Photo Credit: Cool Baby ~ For more images by this photographer, please click the pic and visit their Flickr account.

Today I'm pleased to offer a series of 6 posts that feature the work of two Guelph architects ~ Dario Pagani (1903-1986) and his son Richard Pagani (b 1930). This series was inspired by photographer Cool Baby.

Dario Pagani was born in Milan Italy and moved to Guelph in the 1930's. His first home located at 49 Metcalfe Street was built in 1936 by Dario for his family and has been deemed the first "modern" house in Guelph.

I was fortunate enough to host one of my Breast of Canada calendar launches in this home during the time it was owned by Guelph artist Doug Haines and web designer Sandy Walsh.

Thirteen Evergreen was built in 1961 by Richard, with his father's help, to be used as his own home. A few year's ago, it was featured in the annual Doors Open Guelph (coming up this weekend) and has been designated a heritage building by the City of Guelph.

The flat roofed, contemporary style of house is not a common sight in Guelph or Ontario for that matter. I suspect winter is the main reason.

Number 6 Tobey, which I have never laid eyes on, was designed in 1960 by Ricard Pagani and features redwood walls and a flat, eave less roof.

You may recognize this as the Blount Building.

I found this on the company website: "In 1965 a new building of 85,000 square feet was constructed on a 17-acre site on the present Edinburgh Road site. The new building won a national architecture award."

Funny that they wouldn't mention the architects name; Richard Pagani.

Other Pagani inspired structures have already gone the way of the wreaking ball - including Memorial Gardens - which is currently being transformed into the new City of Guelph Administration building.

Blog Guelph: Toad Crossing Guard

Photo Credit: KJane ~ For more images by this photographer, please click the pic and visit their Flickr account.

This news is unlikely to make the front page of our daily paper - and yet - every year at about this time, a gazzillion Guelph toads go on a dangerous pilgrimage across Arthur Street to their summer home on the Speed River for some hot toady action. Without being too graphic, many of our amphibian residence find the street crossing a crushing experience - hence the voluntary Toad Crossing Guards.

Dozens of Guelph citizens heed the call of our horny friends and head out into the night with buckets and flashy safety vests to both warn motorists and catch and carry toads to safety - thereby ensuring more croaking and less croaking if you know what I mean.

Just one more reason why living in Guelph leaves a good taste in your mouth.

Blog Guelph: The Secret of Guelph

Today I offer several secrets over seven posts.

I have not read or watched the much talked about 'The Secret' so I dare not tread where I am not familiar. But, I do feel qualified to share some other secrets that I've gleaned with the passing of time and my quarter century in G-town - one being that Guelph cartoonist Gareth Lind is one very funny, smart and talented guy.

This should not be a secret - given Gareth's very long career in the 'toon' biz. While 'the best kept secret' has a romantic tone to it, his talent needs a broader audience. I hope that you dear Blog Guelph readers will work your bloggy love vibe and make his site viral.

He posts a fresh, biting strip every Thursday on at this link.

Blog Guelph: Your Family's Health

Today's series of five posts focus on a variety of topics and images that struck me as interesting and in this case important.

Here's the skinny on number one. Currently 'we the people' of this great nation of ours have something called health freedom. As example - we can choose to buy and take vitamins without the approval of our medical doctor.

I don't know about you but I've successfully practised vitamin taking for a very long time with no ill effects.

So.....in a slightly louder typeface..... HERE'S THE BUTT OF THE LATEST WAY YOU AND I MAY BE CONTROLLED IN THE VERY NEAR FUTURE.

On April 30, 2007 the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will close the public comment period on "Guidance" which will classify every alternative practice as medicine so that only licensed physicians can carry out the procedure AND vitamins, minerals, herbs, etc., will suddenly become "untested drugs" which will be forbidden.

Imagine - busted for vitamins!

Read more AND register your concern in two minutes by going to this website.

Canadian author Yann Martel is a man with my kind of mind.

Fed up with the federal governments lack of understanding of the arts - Yann has set himself the task of encouraging our dear Prime Minister to be still and read.

Every two weeks, Yann will mail Stephen a new book - with a letter of introduction and invite our PM to be still and read it. All is being recorded on the very simple website What Is Stephen Harper Reading?

Read the background story that appeared in Saturday's Globe and Mail here.

Now that our next federal candidates have been chosen - perhaps a similar campaign would be worthwhile in Guelph. After all - have you ever lived anywhere with more artists per square foot?

Blog Guelph: Wellington Water Watchers

Click the pic to see more photos by Eye Focus

My apology for tardy Monday blogging.

Today's series of six posts is all about Guelph's drinking water. If you like drinking water, think that your children will want to indulge in an occasional glass and have any issue at all with the amount of plastic that is coating the earth's surface - please read on.

We have a very serious issue before us my fair Guelphites. According to the fast growing local group the Wellington Water Watchers website:

"On April 2, 2007 an application was posted on Ontario’s Environmental Registry for a renewal of Nestle’s Permit To Take Water from Aberfoyle, ON. Nestle’s wants to take 3.6 million liters per day, 365 days per year for a 5 year period."

There are several extremely good reasons why this is just plain bad for you, me and Guelph.

But first, let's look at those numbers a tad closer shall we.

For those of you that get juiced by stats, Candace Sepulis posted these dandy's on her MySpace along with a very good letter of outrage to the Dudes of the Environment.

"Source Name: Drilled Well TW3-80
Purpose of Water Taking: Bottle Water
Maximum rate of taking per minute: 2500 Litres
Maximum number of hours of taking in a day: 24 hours
Maximum volume of taking per day: 3600000 Litres
Maximum number of days of taking in a year: 365
Length of Time: 5 years"

Now then - Guelph is located in the Grand River Watershed. Recall if you can summer. Remember if you will the various forms of water conservation that are recommended by the City of Guelph and at times enforced due to strained water levels in our water shed.

Nestle’s is removing water from the water shed -lots and lots of water. Imagine the current levels of conservation increasing significantly to offset this 'water taking'.

In fact, as I blog, the water from Mills Creek is being sucked into our groundwater as a direct result of Nestle's practise.

Anyone ever hear about Walkerton?

Of course there's the plastic issue to bear in mind too. Bottled water is in - plastic. Plastic is not inert like glass. In fact recent studies have shown that some nasty shit seeps out of plastic water containers into the WATER! So if you're buying bottled water because you think it's healthier - well - you may be all wet.

Read the 'plastic horror story' here.

Oh - did I mention the other nagging problem - yah just can't seem to compost plastic. Good ole Nestle's seems content to introduce trillions of water bottles into our lives - FOREVER. Such a nice legacy for our kids and grandkids don't you think?

Blog Guelph: The Necessary Steps

Click the pic to see the Flickr Photostream of Personality Dialysis

What to do, what to do...???

My pal Mark the toxicologist offered this 3 step suggestion!

1. Send a comment to the Provincial Government--It is easy to cut and paste our sample comment using a link from the www website or drop by our booth at the Farmer's Market and fill out a postcard (it takes 2 minutes to decide the fate of our water for the next 5 years). Anyone living in Ontario can comment. This includes students under 18!

2. Join the www via the website for $25 and receive a FREE Klean Kanteen stainless steel water bottle. Note from Sue: These stainless bottles are brilliant - I own two.

3. Donate (money or time). Mail in a cheque to: Wellington Water Watchers P.O. Box 26036 Guelph, ON N1E 6V8 or e-mail info@wellingtonwaterwatchers.ca

Recipe for Bottled Water Without The Bottle or the Price Tag

Fill glass pitcher with Guelph tap water.
Place in fridge overnight.
Voila!! Most delicious, thirst quenching water goodness is yours.

The Secret according to Wellington Water Watchers: Guelph’s tap water comes from the same aquifer as Nestle Pure Life Aberfoyle water. Tap water is chlorinated. Bottled water is ozonated. If you leave them in a pitcher in the fridge overnight so the ozone and chlorine evaporate off, they should be identical.

Now PLEEEZE keep this wheel rollin'..... send all your water drinking friends to: Wellington Water Watchers. Then take at least two of the three steps.

Blog Guelph: The Guelph Snow Drop

Today's five post series is inspired by the three hot topics in Guelph right now.

First - will spring decide to become springlike anytime soon? Second - what is in store for the recently burnt buildings on Douglas Street and finally, what did local man about town Greg Denton have for breakfast yesterday?

First spring. Sandra Regina caught this weak sign of spring with a cluster of snow drops - a poorly named spring flower with good intentions.

Blog Guelph: Breakfast at the Cornerstone

Finally, Mr. Denton enjoyed a Cornerstone Cafe breakfast specialty: Fruit Salad with Granola and Yogurt.

Okay, now that we've got breakfast cleared, let me share this news - also from Mr. Denton.

Hello musical friends,

An invitation and a reminder that this Sunday, April 15, 9 PM to 11:30ish, is the next Campfire Session at the Cornerstone Cafe. Hosted by Mark Rodford and myself, we set out a big round tray of tea candles (our "campfire") and then sit around the fire and swap songs. Each session this winter has been a little different, a few new faces each time, a few regulars, all have been warm, hardy, and fun-filled affairs. This will be our final campfire for the season, likely to resume in the Autumn.

We'd love to have you join us this Sunday night! Bring along some friends.

Thanks,
Greg Denton.

Photo Credit: KJane ~ Click the Pic

In today's series of 5 images, I'm pleased to offer some mildly odd and strange sights from our fair city.

The University of Guelph cannon is typically used for creative expression, advertising and just plain fun. But in all my year's of 'cannon watching' today's effort trumps them all.

Blog Guelph: Non-Smoking Building

I'm posting a single photo today - this being the 1,001st Guelph based image that has entered the blogosphere via Blog Guelph since February 2006. (Sue wipes sweat from bloggy brow and puts feet up!)

We have a stunning beautiful city filled with talented, creative people. It was been pure pleasure for me to compile this collection of Guelph photographs and introduce the talent behind the many cameras to a larger audience.

Please keep snapping and I'll keep blogging.

When VW Busman was permitted access to the Gummer Building yesterday, he grabbed this shot of the Gummer Building No Smoking Policy.

For your viewing convenience, I've neatly filed all the Blog Guelph 'Fire in Downtown Guelph' photos here.

See you tomorrow.

Blog Guelph: Stairway Waterfall

waterfall, originally uploaded by vw-busman.

I emailed Charlie Fox, my Hillside Festival co-worker from the 80's to tell him the state of our previous office in the Gummer Building. Charlie lost the first 20 years of his work to a fire on Quebec Street - the 15th anniversary of which just passed.

He gave me permission to post his eloquent response.

"Sad indeed - not the way to reno the old Hillside office. Ed Video was incorporated in the law offices just upstairs from the Hillside closet. I even had an office in the back end of the building - the basement suite - before heading out to Saskatchewan. Many artists have had creative digs in the Gummer."

"What a great old building and what a typical Guelph demise. These events are such a loss for the folks that have their studios and offices."

"It was 15 years ago on March 21 since the fire that fried my first twenty years of art practice. But I also remember the love and support the community gave me after that arson-generated mess. Those multiple acts of kindness have always stayed with me as indication of how caring people can really be and how important friendship is to living one's life. A town with a big heart."

"History makes Guelph a bad place as a firetrap, but the creative community made Guelph as good a place as could be for suffering from a fire."

Thanks Charlie.

Blog Guelph: Another Day Dawns

Today's series of 11 photos continue to focus on the Not So Good Friday fire in Downtown Guelph.

The fine folk of Barking Dog Studio's, formerly located on the third floor of the Gummer Building, and friendly host of this blog, have found a temporary home. This link will get you their current coordinates..

The Mercury has a front page story on the fire in today's paper titled: After the Flames.

The Gummer Building had been for sale for the last six months. Let's hope that the owners don't dump the idea of restoration prematurely, take the insurance money and walk away.

Blog Guelph: Fire in Downtown Guelph

I just returned from my first face to face with the Gummer Building. Water was pouring from the front door like a creek runs in the spring. Smoke puffed out from the roofless building - And Venus Smiled was not.

A bunch of men in hard hats mapped out the location of the more permanent barrier that will replace the yellow police tape while firemen milled about. The woman standing beside me was a tenant from the building. She had little to say yet spoke volumes with her body. I simply felt numb.

Hillside Festival had their first office in the basement of the Gummer - maybe in 1987. I'm being generous when I call it an office - in fact it was a closet of another grassroot Guelph group. Charlie Fox and I shared the cramped space for several month as the festival's first employees. We had to synchronize our comings and goings or risk bruising.

If you're interested, here are more fire related links for you to explore.

Blog Guelph: Fire Destroys Gummer Building in Downtown Guelph

I have not so good news to report.

As you will see by the next dozen photos, downtown Guelph suffered a tremendous loss last night by way of a fire in the block of buildings on Douglas Street. Firefighters are still on the scene.

One of Blog Guelph's Flickr guys also happens to be a partner in Barking Dog Studio - a current tenant in the Gummer Building. Chris, aka VW Busman posted this, along with several photos on his Flickr page this morning.

"It's never good news when the alarm company calls you a 3:30am, but early this morning it was as bad as it gets. The Gummer Building, our home from 9-5 (and usually later), for the last 10 years was severely damaged by a fire. Our office on the third floor doesn't look like it was on fire, but there is no longer a roof on the building, thus we can assume a massive amount of smoke and water damage."

"It's a sad day for Guelph and those who work on Douglas Street."

Yes indeed Chris - a very sad day.....

Blog Guelph: April Snow Hits A Blow

Today's series is designed to help you keep your mind off the fact that Guelph is covered in snow - again.

Admit it. Deep down we knew this would happen. So instead of being pissed off, think of how much better the chocolate will taste - nicely chilled and all.

Anyway - Downtown Lynn offers us this 'spring' foto of some crocus flowers freezing their petals off.

The next six posts are dedicated to a pithy E-terview I did with Royal City Rags interviewing queen, Jan Hall from CFRU.FM. It was time for reciprocity - Jan has invited me on her radio program numerous times - and with today marking the beginning of the CFRU Raise Your Voice fundraising drive, the timing for a bloggy debut seemed perfect.

Following the interview I've posted a Barmitzvah Brothers music video for your toe tapping pleasure - then evidence that despite the snow, Easter will arrive in Guelph.

Enjoy the days offerings and the long weekend ahead. And don't forget to Dig In to Downtown Guelph.

Blog Guelph: Interview With CFRU's Jan Hall

CFRU.Fm 93.3's ubiquitous radio host, the wonderful Jan Hall is the voice and brains behind Royal City Rag - the two hour Tuesday morning local news dish that starts at 7 AM.

Here's an E-terview I cooked up and spread lightly over 6 posts.

So then Jan Hall - do tell the blogosphere how you got your start in the wild world of Campus Community Radio?

Jan Hall: Radio is like a drug for me. My first taste was at WEFT90.1FM, a cool community radio station in Champaign-Urbana Illinois while doing specialty veterinary training. I had a Morning Menu show (music and information) then called "Letter from America" from 6-9 a.m. I got to play the Proclaimers every week! Had to give the show up for the sake of my career.

Blog Guelph: Busting A Cap

So then, what possessed you to start Royal City Rag - and at such a chipper hour I might add?

Jan Hall: Honestly, because the ( 7am) slot was available. Usually you take what you can get. I'd waited 10 years to get back into radio - had to get my tenure at the University of Guelph first!

Blog Guelph: Crowning Moments in the Royal City

What has been your crowning Rag achievement so far in your CFRU career?

Jan Hall: Definitely the municipal election campaign programming and specifically our live broadcast from the River Run Center on election night.I get goosebumps just
thinking about it. We kicked Rogers ass that night!

You certainly got me to get my ass down to the River Run that night. Your team was terrific.

Blog Guelph: Covering Guelph

Care to share any of the goodies you have tucked up your sleeve for future Royal City Rag programs?

Jan Hall: I'm always looking to do fun and interesting interviews. Last week we were out on a sheep farm. We're visiting an organic farm in the next week or so. I like to mix it up. I love the market interviews too. We'll be covering the city, environmental and development issues as usual. We're also looking forward to doing more election programming.

Blog Guelph: Royal City Rag

And finally, why should Blog Guelph readers care about Royal City Rag and CFRU?

Jan Hall: I like to think that CFRU is an important part of Guelph. I started my show to make a difference. I never felt that I really belonged in a community until I came to Guelph. CFRU is radio programming for the community by the community.

Blog Guelph: Easter Mass

For the more sacred message and meaning of Easter, try one of the many Easter Services Guelph churches will be offering this weekend.

Photographer FunRevival captures the Church of Our Lady from a slightly different angle.

Peace.

Blog Guelph: 6 String Nation Guitar in Guelph

Flickr Photo by Eye See

Mr. Andrew McPherson sent me this 'must do' musical heads up.

"A quick general email blast about our good friend and CBC maverick, Jowi Taylor's visit to the city o' music this Thursday, April 5th. With the tireless efforts of our own Doug Larson, the two musical minds have put together an amazing day of workshops, 'how to's' and a wicked night of toons, all revolving around the amazing 6 String Nation Guitar. Hope you can make it out to all or part of the day's activities. "

"The show at Manhattan's (7 to 11'ish) features an amazing sampling of the area's rich artistic talents, all strumming a ditty on the aforementioned wunder-axe. It's free (although digging into your pocket for a donation to the project will not be met with resistance) and is likely to sell out, based on the jaw dropping list of performers, so make a reservation or get your butt down there for 7 sharp."

Where: Manhattan's - 951 Gordon Street, Guelph 519-767-2440
When: Thurs. April 5, 7-11?
Cost: Freeeeeee
Who: among others, Jeff Bird, Kate Schutt, Scott Merritt, Ambre McLean, Kevin Breit, Lewis Melville, Tannis Slimmon, Jude Vadale, Craig Norris, yours truly.......

Thanks Andrew!!

Blog Guelph: Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is

Flickr Photo by GDenton

Now for my monthly 'voluntary Blog Guelph Subscription' post complete with an original Greg Denton Foodie Photo.

Here goes. On the top left corner of this fetching Guelph photo blog, you will see a
Visa Mastercard donate button. The idea is pretty simple. If you have come to value the daily photo collection on Blog Guelph and if you can imagine that Blog Guelph is like a Guelphcentric magazine and if you want to quantify the value of said cyber mag to a dollar value and if you'd like to direct that dollar value in Blog Guelph's direction cause 'just because it appears free doesn't mean it doesn't cost', then push the button and follow the directions.

I promise to use the coin wisely.

Thank you...

And one last thing, we're now in third place in the Aussie Bloggie Awards Standings...

Wyndham Bridge, originally uploaded by Dave Noyle.

Dave Noyle captures the lights of a City of Guelph bus as it enters the rail line underpass by the Guelph Armory.

If you walk along the trail beside the Speed River by the River Run Centre, you'll come across this sculpture - which is in fact a time capsule - spearheaded by the Guelph Arts Council as a Millennium project.

That's pretty much all I know. Except - I think I put something in it.

Blog Guelph: Karen McBride

Smack dab in the middle of this crew of gals is Karen McBride - Hillside Festival's volunteer coordinator for the past five years. Thousands of cheerful Hillsiders passed through this capable woman's hands - but I'm sad to say - no more.

This is her going away party! She's moved herself to 'the land downunder' for a program admin job at a Oz festival.

What will we do without her. Guess time will tell.

Blog Guelph: Rockwood Conservation Authority

Rockwood marsh 2, originally uploaded by dsills.

Should you be interested in a half day paddle from Rockwood to Guelph, a common put-in place Rockwood Conservation Authority at the Guelph Line side of the park. I'm told that No Parking signs flank both sides of the road way so parking could be a bit tricky.

Despite what may seem like an easy paddle, I've seen folks tip in the fast moving, full river so do plan accordingly. Life jackets and dry bags with a full change of clothes is the wise way to go.

Beautiful photo by DSills.
