Blog Guelph: The Shadowy Side of Guelph

One of the lifeguards of the Guelph Flickr Pool - Vaneramos - posted a photographic challenge to willing and interested members of the club last week. Today I'd like to feature the 15 photos from 11 different photographers that took on the task.

The challenge word was 'shadow'. Which might come as a breath of fresh air to folks that thought Guelph was some kind of perfect little wonderland.

We do have our dark side too.

And since I'm making a heroic effort today - what with 15 photos and all - I'm not going to post on Friday.

Remember to click the pic and visit the photographers Flickr site. Then tell 'everyone you know' with an internet connection about Blog Guelph.

If you're looking for something wonderful to do this weekend, come on out to the Guelph Contemporary Dance Festival and the Guelph Pottery Festival . Don't forget your camera!

Tis the season for garden tours so far be it from Blog Guelph to miss the opportunity to join in.

Today I'll feature six floral delights, some with treasured wee creatures tucked within. And not that I'm trying to get you off line or anything, but seeing the beautiful gardens in the flesh is worth a walk around. I'd recommend Guelph's Arboretum or Riverside Park if you're stumped.

You will not want to miss this weekends exciting Guelph Contemporary Dance Festival . Even if you've never attended a dance event in your life, so I highly encourage you to click through to their website and book yourself a date.

The unpredictable, the challenging, the beautiful: “Pushing Boundaries” is the The Guelph Contemporary Dance Festival’s slogan this year, and it’s one that “runs both ways,” as Catrina von Radecki, one of the artistic directors, insists. “We showcase contemporary dancers who are pushing their own boundaries of aesthetic and physical performance. But, our audience is always saying how surprised they have been to have their own boundaries tweaked, how they have been startled by the ideas and cultures they’re exposed to, and startled by how dance short-circuits their brains, going straight to their hearts before they’ve even begun to grasp what they’re seeing.”

Blog Guelph: GlobalTox 15th Anniversary

I'm very pleased to help GlobalTox share the news of their 15th Anniversary - partly because Mark and Ron are friends of mine and they've created a terrific, international business that has stood the test of time. But also because they model what to me is good community spirit within Guelph and Wellington County.

For starters, GlobalTox is a founding partner to the Waterloo-Wellington Children's Groundwater Festival - which since its inception in 1994, has hosted over 50,000 students in grades 2 - 6. This week long festival which aims to increase and support greater awareness of water at a grassroots level with interactive activities, demonstrations and exhibits, has become even more important as community water issues now take front page news.

Then there's the GlobalTox Award for Excellence - available to students registered at the University of Guelph. Among other Guelph based charities and organizations that benefit from GlobalTox help are Guelph Food Bank, Guelph Minor Baseball, Guelph Marlins Aquatic Club and Michael House plus a selection of national and international organizations.

Happy Anniversary GlobalTox! They claim crystal is the ideal gift for the 15th but in this world of the wild web, I think blogging is even better.

Blog Guelph: It's A Sign - or Eight

Today I'm offering up six pix's for your viewing pleasure - including some Guelph arty news and a recipe.

If you cruise through the pedestrian walkway beside the former Guelph post office and turn right, you'll come across the colourful backside of the Family Thrift Store. In fact most of the Wyndham Street strip of stores have back entrances to their retail spaces that make for easy access from the Baker Street Parking lot.

On a more personal note, I'm in need of a bloggy break. Given the proximity to the long weekend I've decided to take the rest of the week off.

If you would like to amuse yourself in my absence, scoot through the Blog Guelph archives. If I may be so bold - I suggest wandering through September 2006 .

---Dandelion Tea Recipe---

Infuse 1 OZ. of Dandelion in a pint of boiling water for 10 minutes; decant, sweeten with honey, and drink several glasses in the course of the day. The use of this tea is efficacious in bilious affections, and is also much approved of in the treatment of dropsy.

Blog Guelph: Guelph Photo Artist Dezso

It's been a while since I dedicated an entire series to one photographer so today is the day.

For any of you that attend the Guelph Farmer's Market on Saturday mornings and do the complete circuit down to the far end by the picnic tables, you have likely seen Dezsö's work. He has been vending his photography cards, prints and calendar for several years now.

As you will notice over the 9 photos in today's set, Dezsö has a terrific sense of composition plus the technical skill to bring the image alive - as beautifully illustrated with this capture of the Epitaph in downtown Guelph.

The Guelph Contemporary Dance Festival has been bringing cutting-edge dance to the city of Guelph since 1998. Steered by the co-artistic directors Catrina von Radecki and Janet Johnson - both nominees for 2007 Guelph YWCA Women of Distinction Awards - GCDF has become one of only four Canadian festivals of dance (the other three are in major cities: Vancouver, Ottawa, and Toronto), and of these, GCDF is the smallest but arguably the most ambitious.

How friggin cool is that!

The Guelph Contemporary Dance Festival has a history of bringing thousands of enthusiastic people to the downtown, and this year’s line-up promises the same. Children and adults can take in break-dancing, African drumming and dance as well as flamenco rhythms in beautiful Exhibition Park: noon - Saturday June 2nd and noon - Sunday June 3rd.

Or you can watch dancers lift, spin and twist their way through St. George’s Square in downtown Guelph at noon on Thursday May 31 and noon on Friday June 1.

Here's a flash from the past for you to enjoy with your afternoon tea.

According to the Guelph Historical Railway Association website: "6167 spent most of her active life in the Maritimes hauling freight and passenger trains in the Moncton, New Brunswick area. She gained several reprieves from the wreckers' cutting torch over the years.

One of these reprieves occurred on July 6, 1943 when she was in a head-on collision with her sister engine 6166. In this million dollar wreck, 6167 suffered damage to the extent of $40,000 and had it not been for a critical shortage of locomotives during the war years, it is likely that she would have been scrapped at that time."

If the cacophony of 4am birdsong is any indication of 'birds per capita' I suspect Guelph could range in the Top Ten for Cities With Birds.

Which brings me to this burning Guelph issue: Cosmetic pesticide use.

Our friends the birds are not able to read those pesticide warning notices that appear on lawns after they've been soaked in chemical.

It has been a big week in Blog Guelphville - what with the Guelph Flickr Pool Show opening at the Red Brick Cafe, Blog Guelph's first place position in the weekly Aussiejournos Blog Awards and the two dozen Hillside photos I was inspired to post on May 1 when Hillside Festival weekend passes went faster than stink.

So then - I'll round out the big week with a nine post series today featuring a little news, some bragging, more contest winners, a sign of bloggy influence and a request.

This photo of the most photogenic lady in Guelph was one of the winners in the Guelph Flickr Pool Photo Contest. Rather than focus on her lovely front, Stingray chose the rather striking backside of The Church of Our Lady.

Now the request. If you're digging Blog Guelph and would like to offer your two cents worth - literally, please indulge yourself in a subscription. As a self employed artist - Blog Guelph is one of my forms of work - and I'm attempting to make this effort pay me a modest wage.

Based on other forms of media, I'm thinking $2.00 a month would be fair. Blog Guelph: Guelph Contemporary Dance Festival


I will joyfully admit to loving the Guelph Contemporary Dance Festival which is fast approaching - May 31 to June 3 at various venues, both indoors and outside around the city.

This photo is a promo shot for Montreal's Compagnie De La Tourmente. Their piece ~ Les Traqueurs ~ will be featured as one of the three performances in the Mainstage A block of talent in this year's line up .

I think it's safe to say you can expect to be enthralled! Choreographer Marie-Julie Asselin was given the Community Choice Award during her visit to Guelph's Dance Festival in 2003.

Described as 'raw and athletic', Les Traqueurs will be performed at the festival gala on Friday June 1 at the River Run Center and again on Saturday the 2nd. Tickets can be purchased on-line through the River Run Box Office.

If you're a high school student interested in the GCDF, you get the deal of the century through the eyeGO to the Arts Program. All you have to do is present your student card at the River Run Box Office and ask for an eyeGO to the Arts ticket. Pay your $5 bucks then bring your student card with your ticket to the performance!

On March 20th, I posted a photo of this sign by Denim.

Today I got this cool message from a Unitarian Church member.

"I love your blogs and was so surprised to see my churches (Unitarian Congregation of Guelph) wayside pulpit featured as one of the photographs on March 20. The comment on the photo was that we should really change our sign. Anyhow, it got us moving!"

"So we changed our sign a couple of weeks ago with a quote that I thought reflected the spirit of your blogs ("Every reform was once a private opinion") and attributed the change to your Blog on our sign."

I doubt if I have to explain today's series of posts - what with out BIG OPENING last evening at the Red Brick Cafe.

We had a packed room full of excited camera buffs and Flickr folk - plus the walls were full of terrific photos. I hope this is the beginning of more cool events.

Downtown Lynn who actually works for the Guelph Downtown Board of Management was there to dish out the $100.00 PRIZE to the ultra creative THE GIANT VERMIN - pictured above, in yet another self portrait - standing beside one of his images.

After my blogging marathon of 24 posts yesterday - all dedicated to Guelph's Hillside Festival - I am offering up only three pics today.

If you've enjoyed the photos on this blog over the last year then do hustle your butt to the Red Brick Cafe this evening ~ 8 - 10pm ~ Douglas Street, just off St. George's Square in downtown Guelph, for the first Downtown Guelph Flickr Guelph Pool Photo Contest. Not the most succinct or sexy of names, but really do not let that deter you. As shown by the above pic, the show has been hung with care, folks are excited and we want you there.

Don't fret if you're washing your hair this eve, it being Wednesday and all - the show goes on all month long. Further and because I know you are out there, I'll be posting the famed photos over the next few weeks for those of you tuning in from abroad, down under or way over there.

I've just checked out one of the Hillside Groups Discussions on Facebook.

From what I read, if the number of Facebook folks who tried to purchase tickets but were unable to due to technical difficulties are representative of the larger draw - there must be many frustrated people out there.

The reality is, Hillside cannot grow - islands venues are restrictive in that way. But speaking as an experienced festival starter, and seeing just how festival friendly Guelph is, starting ANOTHER festival is certainly within this communities reach and ability.

Blog Guelph: Hillside Festival 2007 Weekend Passes SOLD OUT!

Today is the first of May and perhaps the only day to get your 24th Annual Guelph Hillside Festival tickets for the 2007 event. Apparently day passes are still available. But I suspect they are going fast too.

I happen to know that weekend passes were sold out by noon at the Guelph office. And even though the website crashed for a few hours this morning, weekend passes are now sold out on-line too.

Update: In fact, the website is reporting all weekend passes are sold out at all locations.

Blog Guelph: Hillside Festival Earliest Birds


These were the first pair of early bird tickets sold this morning from the Hillside Festival office in Guelph. A very wise 40 something couple got their butts to the Trafalga Building bright and early like only good little early birds can. There they happily enjoyed their flask of coffee, confident in their front of line placement.

The Rockets were a gift from the Hillside Festival staff ~ rocket on Hillside!
