Greetings friends, neighbours and countrypeople,
Please prepare your ears and eyes for a weekend of the sounds and sights of creative expression brought to you by Hillside Festival.
Today's series of posts draws attention to a few Guelph based 'cream of the crop' musicians that will wow your knickers into a knot this weekend.

Blog Guelph: Hillside Festival - Mike Sharp Band
I'm blessed to have talented friends and Mike Sharp fits that bill beautifully.Mr. Sharp has been writing songs pretty much his entire life - which makes his first album release - happening Friday night, 9pm at the Island Stage, a not-to-be-missed event for me.
Mike slipped me a copy of 'June' last week, which he co-produced with Nick Craine. The disc has lived in my player ever since. I simply love it.
To hear a couple rockin' 'June' tunes, check out Mike's MySpace.
The musicians joining Mike on Friday night could easily be described as an All Star Guelph Band. We've got Drew McIver on keys, the haunting vocals of Jessy Bell Smith, Mike Ostler on bass, Sam Cino on drums, and Nick Craine on guitar.
As is the Guelph way, I suspect the stage will host a few more of the players that appear on the disc. Buy your copy of 'June' from the Hillside merch tent.

Blog Guelph: Hillside Festival - Tannis Slimmon
One of Guelph's brightest musical lights -Tannis Slimmon- will be taking the Lake Stage on Saturday at 3pm with Jude Vadala and Katherine Wheatley. She'll also show up on at least 3 workshop stages throughout the weekend.Over the last three year's Tannis has been crafting her second album - Lucky Blue. I pretty much know every tune by heart but that didn't stop me from relentlessly playing the 'fresh from the press', stunningly beautiful CD back to back a dozen times. It's pure art in every sense of the word.
You'll be able to purchase 'Lucky Blue' at Hillside, from me any old time or the record store downtown on Quebec Street - so sorry, the name escapes me at the moment.

I've been told by very reliable sources that Jah is a 'do not miss' performer of this years fest. An incredible vocalist and Ngoni player, he arrived in Guelph from Mali in late June thanks to the enterprising efforts of music man Lewis Melville. Jah will be an honorary G-town citizen until September.
Last weekend Jah played Home County Festival in London and this is what they had to say about him in the London Free Press.
Jah's mainstage is Saturday at 4pm. Don't miss him!

Blog Guelph: Hillside Festival - Hillside Moment
After volunteering or patronizing 17 festivals, likely chalking up in excess of a thousand hours of service during the early years, it's my pleasure to be a guest of this year's Hillside.
I've held a variety of positions over my tenure that range from serving in hospitality, gate person, beer server, grant writer, advertising and publicity gal, artist director for three years, emcee, first office staff person, program designer, archivist and attendee of hundreds of meetings. I even ran the first GIGANTIC Yard Sale that generated a whopping thousand bucks!
Today's sold out festival, with just under 6,000 attendees, is in many ways a far cry from the event that started out with this delightful logo and a couple hundred friends. And yet despite it's size, there is a very sweet vibe that percolates through.
I hope you enjoy multiple Hillside moments.

Blog Guelph: Hillside Festival Preparations
Today's series of Hillside posts start out with a shot from yesterday - literally speaking.
As you can see, Hillside Festival is taking form as site preparations begin with the arrival of tents and transports. The beautiful main stage, now a full four years old, stands naked but full of promise.
I was wished Happy Hillside Eve Eve today.....and then I was told, only two more sleeps!

Blog Guelph: Hillside Festival - Henry Kock Elm Tree Grove
In May of 2006, about three dozen friends gathered on the island by the Sun Stage area to plant a small grove of Elm trees in memory of Henry Kock, Hillside's first site manager, weather vein and dare I say spiritual guide.
Being a visionary, Henry initiated annual tree plantings on the island so that future generations of festival goers would have shade. It seemed rather simple at the time, but often the very best things are.
Now as you bask under the cover of one of the many maturing trees, know that it was the intention of Henry and his band of merry planters that gave that gift.
Henry died on December 25, 2006.

Blog Guelph: HIllside Festival Six
With one Guelph Lake Island, three day festival under our belt and the beginnings of a successful relationship planted with the Grand River Conservation Authority, the volunteer gang grew and excitedly pushed forward.
Even though our policy was Rain or Shine, up to this point - Shine was our forte.
And then it rained.
And rained.
And rained some more.
By the time the Cowboy Junkies were suppose to hit the main stage on Sunday afternoon, the site had been reduced to mud and mini lakes and the stage was shut down.
And yet the show went on. One dry spot remained under the wooden picnic shelter currently used for food vendors, but at the time housing our one and only beer area. Everyone crammed in, beer flowed and the Junkies wowed the crowd with tunes from their newly released Trinity Session album which included a cover of James Gordon's song Mining For Gold.
Our own very talented Jeff Bird was (and continues to be 19 years later) sharing the stage.
Of course Monday brought blue skies and sunshine.

She also lived in the apartment above me on Neeve Street.
I Googled Clare hoping to find her so I could flesh out this post. Here's what I came up with: Spilled Ideas.
After the four poster reign of the colourful Ms. Meridew, Hillside transformed the poster art into a contest which was a dandy way to further the community feel. After all, Hillside is so much more than just music.

Lucky festival seven rolled out - with me in my second year as volunteer artistic coordinator packing a talent budget of $9,000.00 dollars. I booked twenty four acts.
In the program I wrote: "The one goal yet to be realized would be the ultimate icing on the cake. It would eliminate months of worry and then reduce our nickel and dimeing dramatically. Maybe we're still too young but .... imagine finding out that Hillside Festival was 'SOLD OUT'. Just imagine."

Blog Guelph: Hillside Festival Fever Sets In
Greetings and salutations.
I hope you're up for a week of 'slow, easy blogging' dear viewers - cause the one handed typist is back at the helm of the good ship Blog Guelph and Downtown Lynn is resting her weary bones.
So here's a slice of cultural history in the making. Hillside Festival Two Four is slinking its way towards its first time as a totally sold out in advance gig!
Having been a volunteer at Hillside One - the one stage, all local bands, pay-what-you-could, Riverside Park located, marvel of an event - I fondly remember roaming through the small, but feverishly dancing crowd with a bucket asking for donations. We managed to break even with a couple hundred dollars of change and small bills.
This photo of large, feverishly dancing crowd taken at Hillside Twenty Three by Accordion Chick.
Stop by later today for more pics and tales of Hillside Festival's gone by.

Blog Guelph: Hillside Festival Twenty Years Ago
Take for example the desire to expand from a one day festival with no over night option to the three day, sleep over if you want event. We introduced a beer tent - in those days run by Brick Brewery and incorporated as a not for profit organization. The main stage needed to be built, then removed immediately following the festival. We needed an office, staff - which turn out to be me and Charlie Fox, actual tickets and selling outlets and a festival program that went beyond the single folded page.
I remember the angst - albeit minor when compared to the other commitments being made - over the decision about running one colour or the cheaper black ink on the cover of the 16 page festival guide.
More than anything, I recall the pressure. We needed to walk our talk and provide proof to the Grand River Conservation Authority and the City of Guelph that we could pull off a truly exception, peaceful, happy, happy event for our community.

Blog Guelph: Hillside Festival Four - The Brave Coordinators Part 1
This is the first half of the mast head from the program for the 'go big or get lost' 1987 Hillside Festival. I'm willing to bet that besides volunteering their time for the entire festival proper, these folks put in hundreds of hours in advance too.
Today, Hillside volunteers are required to work 30 hours pre-festival or 12 hours during the open festival to qualify for a volunteer pass.

Blog Guelph: Hillside Festival Four - The Brave Coordinators Part 2
One more vivid memory I can recall ~ We had no walkie talkies or golf carts - good grief we'd only just entered the world of port-a-potties - so in order to communicate, you had to hoof it and hope that you would find who you were looking for.
The most 'needed' guy in 1987 was site coordinator Henry Kock. Willowy tall with a big black beard, Henry was easy to spot, but he moved with the speed of a gazelle so he was less easy to catch. Still, we could tell that the generator bugs were worked out and the various lighting problems were solved when Henry appeared in his full length, flowing purple pants and start to twirl dance to the music.
It was our sign of success.

Blog Guelph - Liar
Ok,
I lied. Well not so much lied as was mired in confusion.
THIS is my last blog for a while, erase all memory of my farewell message yesterday.
Call it fuzzy logic or just the confused morning brain as the next 5 posts will attest.
See, I misread the signs, got them all backwards.
Clearly, I've experienced an upheaval of time.
Cyndi Lauper said it best,
"Caught up in circles confusion is nothing new
You say go slow; I fall behind

Blog Guelph - Barn Dance
This may be my last post for a time while I remove myself temporarily from you, the officegurl world and, dare I say, the downtown (Gasp!).
The following 8 pics are a pastiche of what I plan to do on this holiday of sorts: a wee bit of dancing and tree climbing, a full-on run into nature seeking quiet reflection (beer in hand, of course), and hopefully a sunrise or two.
It has been my great privilege to scour the photo pool in search of themes each day, discovering the abundance of talent and vision out there. Keep the pictures coming, your next Guest Blogger is counting on you.

Blog Guelph - into the woods
Good Tuesday Blog-o-Sphere.
Today we will traipse through the world of one stellar photographer, Paula Russell. I've chosen 10 pics that may lend some insight into the mind behind the lens; could have chosen 10, 20 or 30 more.
I'm drawn to Paula's images for a variety of reasons; for the calm they evoke, the thoughtfulness, their clarity of light, the shadows, moodiness and so on. Metaphors for life peut-etre?
In my view, sometimes things really are just black and white.
You, on the other hand, may see something entirely different.
Enjoy.

Blog Guelph - I declare this to be international gas mask week
Blog Guelph is in a particularly happy state of mind today as the next 5 posts will attest .
Sweetness
Light
Joy
and, from none other than The Giant Vermin, a wee bit of Silliness.
Go forth and spread the exuberance people - trust me, it's contagious.

Blog Guelph: Quick Check
Downtown Lynn is up to her Lynnie chin chin today with preparations for Art On The Street - so I will attempt to rub off the rust from my blogging skills and post a 'bunch' of pics from our lovely city, a few at a time, over the course of the day. Call it SLOW blogging if you will.
Slow is my new mantra. Fast and I are no longer seeing each other.
Right then.
So if you really want to get a taste of Guelph and have a couple hours of time on Saturday, please find your way to downtown Guelph for the very wonderful Art On The Street.
Should you come by car, forget about looking for a meter parking spot and head straight for the Old Quebec Street covered parking lot accessible off Macdonnell Street. It's cheap, shaded and close to where you want to be.
Then proceed to St. George's Square and pick a direction. With luck you'll run into the vivacious Downtown Lynn, the babe behind this fine event.
Sue Richards
PS: Of course you know to clic on the picture for more images by each of today's photo artists.

All the photos for today will be drawn from the Blog Guelph Flickr Pool - now boasting 55 photographers. To help get you in the mood for the Art in the Street event-o-rama, I'll keep them downtown Guelph-centric.

Blog Guelph: Michelle Miller
The lovely and oh so talent Ms. Miller will be selling her wares on Saturday from lucky booth number 13 - located in the vicinity of the fountain.
Should you be a future bride, I happen to know that Michelle specializes in wedding tiara's.
Of course you know - but that doesn't stop me from telling you again - there will be 100 artist booths to visit at Art on the Street - this Saturday in downtown Guelph.
Big day!

So you've shopped your brains out at Art On The Street and now you want to grab a bite to eat - - - please allow me to point you in the direction of Carden Street, home to Guelph City Hall and the location of several interesting restaurants that come with sidewalk patios.
While you're there you can catch a glimpse of the NEW city admin center being built beside the current city hall.

The Albion's snazzy new sign and awning finally made it through the red tape of rules. Although the Alb is a tad away from the Art Action, the patio is well worth a visit for a refresh.
I'm told the Chicken Caesar is to die for.

Blog Guelph - 4 more sleeps
I had initially thought it was shameless to promote my own event as Guest Blogger until I realized two things:
I would have hustled Sue Richards to do the same and,
it is not about me but....
the 100 mixed-media artists that will line Wyndham & Quebec Streets.
Accompanied by Zero Gravity Circus, Sonic Playground, yummy food, Guelph Environmental Leadership's massive chalk art undertaking, even live music all afternoon with Burrows, Ambre McLean, Ancient Chinese Secret (Brian Connelly from Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet, Atomic 7), and the Strawberry Apostles.
Witness many Acts of Art this Saturday, 11 am- 5pm.
The following 7 posts are some of my personal faves from a few members of our Guelph Flickr pool who just so happen to be 3 of the artists exhibiting and selling their works of art that day. Fix.inpost is none other than Graham Taylor, Raven Girl is the lovely Julia Busato, and we end things off today with a beautiful example of Mary Calarco's work.
Come out and support them on Saturday. Have yourself some fun.
I have been conspiring with mother nature and she assures me it will be a beautiful day...

Blog Guelph - Thank you Guelph for the past 10 years!
It is with great sadness and respect that Blog Guelph announces the departure of one of it's most revered Photographers, Dezso.
Dez needs to take a break from our photostream for a while to regain his health. He has been a mainstay of the Saturday Farmers Market for a decade now as well as a prolific poster of fabulous and original perspectives of the world, particularly Guelph.
As Dez states, " As one door is closed, another will open."
And so it is that todays 6 posts offer us a glimpse of doorways.
Please click on this gorgeous shot to read more in his own words and while you're at it, check out the rest of his beautiful stream of photos.
Thank you for all the art my friend. You are an inspiration.
Be well.

Blog Guelph - speed
Oftentimes an image
blurred
is exactly as it should be.
Unintended
(a nudge, less than ideal conditions, perhaps even a few too many)
or precisely calculated
to throw the focus out.
Nevertheless the end result is
picture perfect.

Blog Guelph - Happy Dominion Day
I realize this all seems so cliche, but Blog Guelph would be remiss to ignore Canada's 140th Birthday.
For all our friends tuning in from afar, we had a picture perfect weekend, a whole lotta flag waving, some spectacular fireworks, even a tree-snagged paratrooper.
An historic moment indeed.
