Blog Guelph: 10/31

Sinister, originally uploaded by firda.

The thrift stores are a flurry of activity today as Guelphites clammer to pull off their creepy costumes for the first big, pre daylight savings time 10-31 in my memory. Yes folks, our clocks have yet to fall back meaning it will be light longer than ever tonight.

So here's the question of the day? Will parents buckle to the incessant pleas of their ghostly brood and hit the streets before sunset or try to restrain the eager alter egos until dark of night?

So you know, I've got my money is on the buckle factor.

AND - thanks to the 'it's happening faster than we ever imagined global warming' we will also enjoy unseasonably warm temperatures.

How scary is that. Boo Hoo.

So then, and on a more cheerful, helpful Blog Guelph note, if you happen to be one of the poor misfits that didn't scoop a mullet wig at VAVA Village or mistakenly dumped the Hallowe'en costume bag during spring cleaning, today's series of photographic brilliance will provide you with some easy solutions to your tricky day.

Blog Guelph: Devil's Night

haunted, originally uploaded by digitalambitions.

'Tis a spooky time of year. Tonight is Devil's Night, tomorrow Halloween and the streets of downtown Guelph will no doubt be swarmed by costumed crazies.
But lest you think that's all that's going on in the city centre, think again.
There are a plethora of good times to be had.
Just take a look at the following 5 pics to see some of what the core has in store for you.

Just when you thought it couldn't get any better, along comes Edifying Edifice. A precursor to the Guelph Festival of Moving Media, this special event sees ten local media artists transform downtown Guelph with site-specific video installations over five nights. Blog Guelph: Love Love Love

, originally uploaded by randysutherland.

The Dalai Lama is in Canada this week - apparently meeting with our man Steve and the boys sometime today. It was a nice relief to hear this news broadcast between the regular grim reports of death, destruction and despair that the media feed our bleeding ears.

I especially found pleasure in one short clip that CBC Radio One ran of the chirping voice of the Dalai Lama reporting that he is now an honourary citizen of Canada - followed by the most delightfully love filled giggle that you could ever hope to hear from a person.

The man is full to the brim with love.

And so too is Blog Guelph on this fine last Monday of October.

Love

Blog Guelph: Word Crazy

Asylum, originally uploaded by peterkelly.

No, we haven't gone completely bonkers today, but we do confess to loving words as well as pictures. Pictures and words, that's Blog Guelph in a nutshell.
Our incredibly talented photographer, Peter Kelly, has nicely captured an historically crazy word.
Asylum - late Middle English via Latin from Greek 'asulon' - refuge, from 'asulos' - inviolable.

Each and every day I receive an email shedding light on the origin and usage of a single word.
Whether or not this improves my word power is debatable but it is fascinating in an oh so nerdly way.
Take a look for yourself, A.Word.A.Day.

Blog Guelph: Flies in Your Face

this is a cow, originally uploaded by downtownlynn.

Welcome to Wednesday.

Today's series of posts give way to some well photographed animals. Since much of Guelph's history is based in agriculture - what with G-town being the home to The Ontario Veterinary College and all - AND because OVC just happens to be the oldest veterinary college in Canada and the United States, it seemed fitting and fair to let the critters have their day in the blogospotlight.

OVC was originally located in Toronto in 1862, moved to Guelph in 1922 and became a founding college of the University of Guelph in 1964. To review Key Dates in the History of the Ontario Veterinary College, click on the link.

To see other cows, cats and dogs previously posted on Blog Guelph, click on the hyper-linked word.

Moo to you.

Blog Guelph: 3

Geese, originally uploaded by Ithomas29.

Today Blog Guelph takes a gander at the magical, mystical, marvelous Number 3.
Everywhere you look, even in our photo pools, the number three seems to rear it's significant head.
trio...triad...triplet... triptych...trilogy...tricycle...triplicate...triumverate...
it goes on and on and on...

So behold (and click!) a smattering of images and reflections on the first odd prime number:

Pythagoras called three the perfect number, basically because it expressed all - beginning, middle, and end.

When something happens three times, there is a pattern.

Earth is the third planet in its local Solar System.

In the constellation Orion, his belt is made up of 3 stars in a row.

Third time's the charm.

A hat-trick in sports is associated with succeeding at anything three times in three consecutive attempts.

Now, on the count of three...

Blog Guelph: Sharon Smith

Photo Credit: Ian Thomas ~ For more images by this photographer, please click the pic and visit their Flickr account.
Photo taken in Guelph, Ontario Canada.

For the last nine years, my book keeper, Sharon Smith, regularly came to my home office to do my books. Always punctual, I would have her coffee ready to pour, paper work organized and my prehistoric iMac cranked on in anticipation.

Like a tradition, we would start the monthly visit pretty much the same way every time. Sharon would settle in the office chair and gently pat the computers dusty head - I would offer up specific accounting needs that I had identified and we'd both comment on the state of the universe. Then I would leave her to the task of coaxing data into the belly of the beast of 'artificial intelligence'.

When Sharon didn't appear last Thursday morning, I immediately started to worry. It was 9:15 and in the entire time we'd worked together I had never known her to be late.

I called her home and left a message.

When her sister called back a short time later to tell me the sad news of Sharon's sudden death earlier in the week, I was stunned to say the least. Now I'm deeply saddened.

Today's series of several images is dedicated to my friend and wonderful book keeper Sharon Smith. She saw me through some magnificent highs and excruciating lows over our years together - always steady as eddy. Indeed, she helped managed many of Guelph's artists and community group finances and guided even more befuddled people through 'tax madness' each year. Sharon loved dancing, singing and being outdoors by the shore of any body of water.

She is and will continue to be greatly missed. Gilchrist Funeral Home Visitation and Memorial service details are here.

Stay Cool, originally uploaded by peterkelly.

As our week of food themed snaps continues to pour forth, I'm delighted to post five finger lickin' photos, from our pool of terrific photographers, for your gastronomic pleasure.

Located on the north side of the 401 between the old highway six exit and the Hanlon Expressway, you can't miss this classic, big ass Schneiders billboard that lights up like Christmas at night. Known in some circles as the 'wiener beacon', the sign has stood its ground - in various forms - since 1961. The 'Famous for Quality' slogan was coined in 1929.

Blog Guelph: Green Strides

It's not easy bein' green.
It seems you blend in with so many other ordinary things.
And people tend to pass you over 'cause you're not standing out like flashy sparkles in the water- or stars in the sky.

But green's the color of Spring.
And green can be cool and friendly-like.
And green can be big like an ocean, or important like a mountain, or tall like a tree.

When green is all there is to be
It could make you wonder why, but why wonder why? Wonder,
I am green and it'll do fine, it's beautiful!
And I think it's what I want to be.

Blog Guelph: Soft Colour

P1100287, originally uploaded by downtown_lynn.

Today's series of images are dedicated to the definition of 'soft'.

If you pay heed to the mainstream media, you may come to believe that there is much hardness in the world. The brutal images, inflamed letters and numbing news create the impression that kindness, love and compassion are going the way of the dodo. In this culture pain and suffering sell and money is where it's at.

Thankfully Blog Guelph is not mainstream.

Blog Guelph: Election season

Card Magic, originally uploaded by ~Stingrays~.

Tomorrow is Election Day.

Of course the choice is yours and yours alone and while it's not my place to influence your decision, I strenuously recommend you do vote.
Because you can.
Here's a couple of reasons I implore you to get to the polls:

:: It took until 1916 for women in Manitoba to win voting rights and finally within nine years the rest of the provinces followed suit, ending with Quebec in 1940.
That's mindblowingly recent history in my books.
:: There are millions of people in the world who do not have opportunity to vote.
You do.
Enough said.

Now I also believe the voting age in Canada should be dropped to 16.
But that's just me....

So don't just let those cards fall wherever they may. Speak out!

Read more, find your polling station, place your X on your ballot.
Run, run to the polls....

Blog Guelph: At The River Run, the sky's the limit

River Run, originally uploaded by ~Stingrays~.

10 years ago today, the dream of many finally came to fruition. A performing arts centre in an oh so artsy town, nestled on the banks of the mighty Speed River.
Since that time, thousands of concerts, dances, conferences, plays and all out celebrations have taken place here.
It's the kind of place that you have to enter to realize it's majesty and full potential.

The River Run Centre is dressing itself up and laying out a variety of events for it's birthday party, so why not head there this beautiful long weekend to partake?
Here are the host of activities planned for the 10th:
The Party tonight - a very elegant soiree
The Concert friday night - Jim Cuddy may be sold out...
and a FREE Community Open House on Saturday which will offer attendees the opportunity to take a behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of such a grand facility. Lighting, soundchecks, even performances by 20 community arts organizations.

If this is a place you've rarely visited, take this opportunity to see what lies within those massive walls. If you think you know it well, look again. Just imagine the potential for the next 10, 20, 50 years....

For more information on this special weekend, visit the River Run website.

Blog Guelph: Cat Nap

Catnap, originally uploaded by peterkelly.

The five set for this weeks apex offer traces of impermanence caught forever by a bevy of swift finger foto dudes.

Now then - allow me to plant a thought.

Take the time to notice something beautiful in your world today without trying to capture it. Let its shape, texture, colour, smell and energy infuse your spirit and fill your memory bank. Later, when you most need it, you can make a withdrawal from your account.

I call this compound interest for the soul.

Yes people, the blessed culinary event has returned!

If you haven't seen an ad, a poster, a postcard or a web banner yet, then clearly I'm not doing my job....

Here's the nitty gritty of it all: Click on the ad to your right or visit our shiny new website, www.downtownguelph.com, click again on Dig-In Downtown and behold the bounty that 12 of our finest restaurants have to offer. Every Tuesday & Wednesday throughout October. And there are 5 of them this year.
Whoohoo!
Lunches for $10-15.

Take a friend to lunch, take your lover to dinner, take yourself out for a treat......Eat local, eat well.
Eat people, eat.

Blog Guelph: Watcher of Guelph Skies

Watcher of the Skies, originally uploaded by 1Freek.

Thanks to the purchase of a spiffy, delux yoga mat from Living Yoga on Wyndham Street, several hours of my weekend time was consumed by lying on my back and watching the glory of the September sky. It appears by today's series of images that I was not alone.

Autumn is the Act Four of 2007 and this fall Mother Nature's costume changes are vying for a Dora Award. Do make an effort to catch part of the show. The Guelph set is particularly striking and designer Mom Earth surely know how to dress a city.
