Blog Guelph: On the right path
Good Good Day People.
Did anyone get a chance to catch sight of the sunrise in our part of the globe this morning?
Out of this world I tell you.
I took it as a sign.
A sign that the sun will come out tomorrow.
I scrambled around the outside of my house in a vain attempt to grab a shot, but to no avail,
so I'm hoping that a few of you Flickr-heads may have caught this magnificence for a post tomorrow
hint hint.
Blogger appears to be having some hiccups so your full viewing pleasure may be somewhat staggered today.
Hang in there while I post some lovelies for our theme, " Winter, Lights & Music".
Speaking of, don't forget to come to downtown Guelph this Saturday for the seasonal celebration that is, funnily enough,
A free family skate, an EcoMarket in Old Quebec Street, a killer lineup on stage featuring The Great Wooden Trio, Nick Craine, Jesse Stewart, Drew McIvor, Katherine Wheatley, Jude Vadala, Jane Lewis,
The Funky Mamas and so much more.
Oh, and Santa too....
Just click on the link to see what else I have in store for you.
See you there,

Here's where it's all happening Saturday evening....just over to the right (in front of Old Quebec Street) you'll find the stage.
Smack dab in the middle, an ice-sculpting demonstration and to the left, 2 (yes 2!) horse & trolleys.
Dress cosy now, although you'll be warmed by the intensity of fun..

Blog Guelph: First Snow Storm
Finally.
The bone chilling rains and dampness of November have given way to our first light but dramatic covering of snow in good old Guelph town. Yesterday's chaotic multi-faced weather front came at us from all directions and I quite expected to be buried in 'the white stuff' this morning. Instead we got dusted.
If there were such a thing as Actra Awards for months, November would definitely be honored with Best Drama Queen for her performance in The Eleventh Month.
For those of you coming to us from countries where snow is just a word, I hope you enjoy today's seven post series. To enhance the experience, try sticking ice cubes in your underwear before viewing.

Blog Guelph: Simple
I have to admit, yesterday's fascinating slice of history, "How to iron a man's shirt" brought several things to light for me.
1. I still cringe when I hear the word Lady. I ain't no lady. This is evidenced by the fact that,
2. The only way I iron is to boil the kettle for tea and shake the wrinkles out.
3. Until the day I die, I don't want "many happy ironing days". There is just not enough time.
Well, now that we all - ok some of you - know how to iron properly, let's see if we can learn a thing or two from one stellar photographer that I've chosen to spotlight today.
Denim is a woman who, according to some of her admirers, imparts a sense of wonder into everyday things.
Magic into the mundane.
Viewing her photopool is akin to wandering into "A waking dream".
Amen.
In light of my own selfish pursuit of simplicity today, in desperately seeking something achingly sublime (yes, I am a romantic), I present 7 shots from Donna Dobbin aka Denim.
Here's hopin' you could use a little of the same.
Oh, and I believe these are all taken with expired film but you'll just have to check out her photostream to find that out for yourselves...
Enjoy.

Blog Guelph: Monday is......Ironing Day
Welcome to the last Monday of November.
Yesterday I found this Guelph vintage "How to Iron a Man's Shirt" video clip on YouTube. It's a different, highly educational and perhaps a more quaint way to launch our week.
"Say ladies, it's ironing day at your house, but it can still be a good day."
~ Recorded around 1952, this 10-minute long 16mm film was produced by the Department of Public Relations of the Ontario Agricultural College in Guelph and the Information Branch of Ontario's Ministry of Agriculture and Food. ~
May your day be smooth and wrinkle free.
Press on......

Enough!
Enough with the sad and pitiful blogs of late...we are dragging ourselves down people!
No more Maudlin Mondays, Dank and Dour Tuesdays....no more shall we weep on Wednesday.
With this, somewhat bold and admittedly forced, meteoric rise of spirit, I offer you six, seven, maybe even eight photos of power and all that it implies.
Enduring spirits, hopefulness, strength, will, good health and lightness.....phew!
It's going to be a better day.
I promise.
To start us off today I extend to you the strength of Peter Kelly's 'Zeus and 3 Apollos'.
You might just need to give me the day as I slowly stagger these robust offerings....

Blog Guelph: Birds on a Wire
It seems we're on a roll here at Blog Guelph with our dampened November spirits, so let's just keep it coming.
Sue really had Maudlin Monday all wrapped up yesterday in a nice tidy package of pics depicting this lowdown state of mind, and me?
Well since the first two words I heard on the radio this morning were Overcast and Drizzling, I think we'll call this Dank and Dour Tuesday.
Oh, we're not trying to bring you down people, merely getting right into the gloom.
Celebrating it if you can - er - will.

It's Monday yet again.
As a public service I'd like to offer several choices for approaching the often loathed beginning of the week. Of course this is a thinly veiled attempt to keep myself and Downtown Lynn afloat through the remaining soul sucking twelve days of November - but so be it. We are a self-help blog selfishly focused on ourselves.

Blog Guelph: Morning Sun
Good Morning Sunshine!
In direct response to Sue's November blahs blog yesterday, I offer a ray of hope, a glimmer of warmth.
Let's face it, November is way harder than February.
Way.
But we'll try to change that with a sunnier view today.
If it's heat you're seeking, might I recommend two events this weekend that are sure to get your temperatures rising.
Another installment of Shivaboom will be held at The NEW Salsateria this Saturday night. If you like to shake your booty then get yourself up those stairs quick. In no time you'll be moving to the super-stylin' world rhythms of DJ Eccodek (the incomparable Andrew McPherson).
Alas, on the very same night, The Guelph Contemporary Dance Festival will be hosting their fall fundraiser at the Guelph Youth Music Centre. This will no doubt be a great event too. Witness top notch dance performances, be lulled by the sweet croonings of Josh & Andy from The Skydiggers, and dance! dance! dance! with Dance Hall Free For All.
I'll just bet if you tried hard enough, you could attend both these fiesta's. It's an under 5 minute run from one location to the other.
I know.
Whichever way you do it, do it with steam the rest of this November week.
"Lift my days, light up my life...."

Blog Guelph: November Syndrome
Besides being the 'moody swing month' between sunny October and Xmonth, November seems to suck the colour out of everything. Fog, sleet, wind, rain, snow, frost and thunder make the rounds - sometimes within a twenty-four hour period. Too early in the calendar year to fully hibernate - we are left to remember war and dead loved ones.
Ugh!
But then - just as I head to the fridge to drown my sorrows in sugar, the sun breaks out, temperature rises and a hint of August caresses my face.
Thankfully 30 days has November.

Blog Guelph: Inferno
It was anything but a Good Friday last April that saw the Gummer and Victoria buildings on Douglas Street go up in flames.
Since that time, someone has been charged with the crime, businesses have, for the most part, relocated and Douglas Street is pulling itself out of the ashes.
These 6 pics are ones not previously blogged so as not to repeat ourselves. You'll see Douglas Street in both devastation and in happier times.
And, if I weren't such a luddite, I'd be able to display this enhanced photo of the proposed rebuild. But I am, so you'll have to click to see what might be.

Blog Guelph: Foot Fest
Our bloggy apology for the absence of posts yesterday. T'was a blip in the Big Blogger hardware that was way beyond our control.
I woke up thinking about feet this morning. With the first dusting of snow and cold damp temperatures blanketing our town, the feet of Guelph will now be going under cover. Only a hand full of the hearty or menopausal will dare to expose their toes to the elements. Most of us will be sock bound til April.
And so today I'm happy to present Foot Fest in six seven posts. May your toes stay toasty, heels hang tight and soles surrender to the quiet of the season.
Be grounded.

Blog Guelph: Cancer - 101 Solutions To A Preventable Epidemic
Welcome to a new week.
Erin writer Liz Armstrong was my co-writer on the Breast of Canada calendar for 5 of the 6 years I published. The woman is a wealth of green and not so green knowledge.
Today it is my pleasure to offer a 8 post review of her latest co-write effort, Cancer - 101 Solutions To A Preventable Epidemic.
Here's a slice from the media release.
"Finding a cure for cancer is the dream of so many researchers, health practitioners and patients alike and much time, energy and money has been channeled toward this noble goal. However, what is often lost in the desperate search for the cancer 'cure' is the extensive body of scientific evidence that addresses cancer prevention."
"In their new book, "Cancer: 101 Solutions to a Preventable Epidemic" (New Society, 2007) Liz Armstrong, Guy Dauncey and Anne Wordsworth examine the complex relationship between the air we breathe, the food we eat, the water we drink, the products we use, and the health and well-being of our bodies, and of our planet."

Blog Guelph: The Precautionary Principle
"The precautionary principle states that when an activity raises the threat of harm to human health or the environment, precautionary measures should be taken even if some cause and effect relationships are not yet fully established scientifically," says author Guy Dauncey.
And so you have the enlightened 'horse before the cart' core premise of the 101 solutions in this extensive book on cancer prevention.
As the saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Liz Armstrong, Guy Dauncey and Anne Wordsworth have taken on the task of breaking down a huge and scary picture into 101 various sized chunks for us to chew on. Instead of blaming, the authors strive to pin responsibility on the right donkey then encourage that same beast to learn, evolve and take wise action.
It's a 300+ pager of well organized ideas that could easily be a primer if you're new to the question 'what can I do?' Or it will add additional fuel to your think tank if you're a life long green freak.
If you live in Guelph and want to own this cancer prevention bible, Liz is offering this super special deal - "One of the easiest ways to get the book is by having people send an email to me at liz@ican.net with full name, street address, city & postal code. Blog Guelph: Lightless
Dear viewers,
Prepare yourselves for the coming dark times ahead.
In the past, this time of year has always filled me with dread and pretty much a dour personality. But bummed out begone! With the help of my fellow flickr-heads, I'm determined to see the light.
So don't forget to fall back in line with the U.S. in the wee hours of Saturday night / Sunday. Change those clocks.
No need to be scared people, spring WILL eventually return.
And get out there tomorrow to revel in the launch of the Guelph Festival of Moving Media 2007.
Embrace the darkness.
