Blog Guelph: Lights Camera Action
At long last we've reached the first full day of winter. But more importantly, the darkening days are behind us hearty Guelphites and for the next six months we can sashay with the returning sun. Please all join hands and swing around!
This is the last Blog Guelph post for 2007. Downtown Lynn and I must rest our bloggy minds and let sugar plums dance in our heads. While we're off dancing and prancing and doing all that jolly stuff, please amuse yourself by checking out our blog roll - situated in the right hand sidebar, or our vast 1896 post archive listed below the roll.
Thanks to the terrificly talented pool of Flickr photographers that see Guelph in so many lights and the 65,000 unique visitors that popped by for a wee look this year. May your halls be decked my friends.
As a public service for the festive fowl eaters among you, the following YouTube video is a vintage gem I've been hording for just such an occasion.
See you January 2nd blog fans.
Until then, Hark!!

Blog Guelph: Barrelling Down That Hill
I've come to my last post of 2007.
Thanks to the indomitable Sue Richards I've had the great pleasure of cruising through various Guelph Flickr pools, witnessing the wealth of talent, the humour, the colour, the joy, and, sometimes, the bare truth.
Now I know the rain is moving towards us in this neck of the woods but I've chosen some wintry shots today nonetheless.
So get out there and have some fun while the white stuff is still upon us.
Chances are it'll return.
Bank on it.
I wish you all a merry christmas and most of all a very happy, healthy and fortunate New Year.
All my best

Blog Guelph: December Sky
Welcome to Wonderful Wednesday.
Today's 10 pic series is a direct reflection of my wandering mind mixed with a small dollop of local news and gossip.
First off - I've just returned from the Speedvale Liquor Store. According to my LCBO pal Steve, the first hint of frenzy hit the joint today. Happy to be on the edge rather than stuck in the middle of booze buying chaos I thought that a warning to the libation loving Guelph based Blog Guelph reader was in order.
So consider yourself forewarned liquor lovers. It's about to get crazy in them thar Liquor Control Boards of Ontario.
This purdy picture of the Church of Our Lady taken down by the bus station on Mcdonnell Street was shot by Ms. K Jane. See more of her images by clicking the pic or the hyper-linked label below.

The 2nd Annual Community Solstice Carol Singing in St. George's Square is happening at 7 p.m. on Thursday Dec. 20th in delightful Downtown Guelph.
Carol sheets will be provided as will a conductor - local songwriter James Gordon.
A collection will be taken during the event for Sister Christine and her ongoing efforts to help the homeless.
All ~ including the singing shy ~ are welcome!
The Guelph Community Solstice Carol Sing began two years ago at St. Joseph's Hospital as many Guelphites gathered there to lend vocal support to Guelph Tree God Henry Kock, who passed away at Christmas in 2005.

Blog Guelph: Under the colours
Everyone loves a parade.
So they say.
Some parades are more spectacular than others and the Rockwood Farmers Parade of Lights (I made that title up) has got to be one of the best.
First of all, it takes place at night, thus the emphasis on lights.
Secondly, it takes place at a time that is actually closer to Christmas; clearly not influenced by the shopping season alone.
Other municipalities could take a cue from this.
I missed this parade last week and, by the dearth of Flickr photos, so did many of you.
So I'm pulling from the archives on this one.
Enjoy the light fantastic.

Blog Guelph: Dumped!!
Jingle bells,
winter fell,
all throughout the night.
So much snow
our city slowed
and the people hid from sight.
Brrr!
Snow plows roamed
the buried streets
and tried to clear the mess.
Our aching backs
from digging out
made Sunday free of rest!
Sliding round the town,
On our useless summer tires,
Gordon hills a rink.
Grange a glacier.
Shopping must get done,
Santa's on his way,
What fun is this untimely storm
Where is global warming today?
Eh?

Blog Guelph: Ice Ice Baby

Ice ice baby
All right stop collaborate and listen
Ice is back with my brand new invention
Something grabs a hold of me tightly
Flow like a harpoon daily and nightly
Will it ever stop yo I don't know
Turn off the lights and I'll glow
To the extreme I rock a mic like a vandal
Light up a stage and wax a chump like a candle
Dance go rush to the speaker that booms
I'm killing your brain like a poisonous mushroom....
Um, yah, you are killing my brain Vanilla.
Scratch that noise.
To begin again, today's Blog Guelph is dedicated to the slippy stuff.
A theme decided upon whilst crawling down my icy steps in the last day or two.
So if you see any olds or infirm out there trying to shovel or even just walk for that matter, give them a hand willya?
That's what good samaritans do, and we here at Blog Guelph are nothing if not good samaritans. Click on these next 6 pics to enter these photographers frigid worlds...
Here's a better piece of a poem than the tripe I subjected you to at the beginning of this blog...
...but it is never over; nothing ends until we want it to.
look, in shattered midnights,
on black ice under silver trees, we are still dancing, dancing.
meet me in an hour at the limits of the city.

Blog Guelph: 2007 Guelph Gift Giver Guide
Happy Wednesday and welcome to today's series on gift giving.
On Monday I ranted about out of control Christmas consumption and how such consumerism taxes our fragile environment. To witness some of the evidence, check out the post Christmas garbage day in your neighbourhood.
So as not to be confused with Scrooge I must state that I'm all for giving. My preferred style is from the heart and when the spirit moves me, not just because of an arbitrary calendar date. But such a date does exist. So the question is, how can gift giving be meaningful and part of a sustainable tradition?
Lucky for us, the definition of 'gift' provides the perfect fodder for expanded gift giving possibilities..
1. Something that is bestowed voluntarily and without compensation.
2. The act, right, or power of giving.
3. A talent, endowment, aptitude, or inclination.
Please enjoy the following nine, gift idea laden posts. I hope they stimulate your imagination and help to keep you from the madness of the mall.

Blog Guelph: Seeing Clearly?

I was in the mall yesterday (yes, the mall, sigh) and found myself contemplating Sue's Monday blog.
As I was trapped amidst the shopping crazies -indeed ONE of them - it became glaringly evident that I felt oh so gratefully out of place.
I am too loud, too inappropriate and too happy a person to be caught up in the melee and grump of the season and yet still fell victim to the mad consumerism.
This I must keep in check, review, revise and challenge.
And then I received an email today from an amazing organization called AVAAZ.
Here's just a little piece of what they had to say,
Dear friends,
Right now, a major UN summit in Bali has just a few days left to hammer out an agreement on stopping catastrophic climate change. But instead of helping out, Canada is actually sabotaging the UN talks! On Saturday, experts gave us the global "fossil" award for being the worst country in the world on climate change.
Seriously? THE WORST?
Time for a new government.
Time for a revolution.
Please click on this link to find out more....
So todays series of photos - for a variety of reasons - has Blog Guelph looking out, from within.

Blog Guelph: The Monday Edition
So it's the second week of x-month, 11 days until winter officially starts, Human Rights Day and a grey Monday - all boiled together.
Here's my thought of the day.
I'm wincing at the juxtaposition of the daily warnings of our sickening climate and the crush of mindless, unneeded consumerism that this season stimulates and endorses. We boost the economy while we stick it to our ecology.
Ho, Ho, Ho. Go Shopper Go!
Today is people photo day on Blog Guelph. We are all on the planet together my friends. We have no hope for a better past. But today holds promise for everyone. Our future depends on now. We can't wait for politicians. We CAN lead ourselves.

Today we honour the streets at night.
Here's an accompanying piece of a Neruda poem to fit the mood.
(Yes, I love him. Yes, I may in fact, overuse.)
...riddled with fires, flowers, flights,
the revolving night, the universe.
And I the smallest thing,
made drunk by the great void,
starred,
in the image, likeness
of mystery,
felt myself pure part
of abyss,
turned with the starlight....
Don't forget to click on each photogs pic to see the world through their eyes.

Blog Guelph: Strength In Numbers
Welcome to Wednesday.
Yesterday Stats Canada released their census numbers for 2006 so I scurried to their site to get the skinny on Guelph. As much as I loath doing statistics, I get pleasure reading them. Please allow me to regale you with some of the finer details of Guelph's population in today's six post series.
As long suspected by my single, straight female friends, Guelph's population does in fact have more women than men. In fact, there are 3065 more gals wandering around this town than fellows.
Strangely, the male female ratio is exactly the same in the 40 - 44 year old category with 4775 of both blues and pinks.

Blog Guelph: Happy Hannukah

A good Tuesday all,
I had hoped to post some pics and blather on about the first night of Hannukah tonight but it seems there are very few of this tribe within FlickrGuelph.
Any of my keyword searches such as menorah, Hannukah, Hanukah, Chanukah and dreidel drew a big fat blank.
Sigh.
But here's a beauty of a shot by flickr-head, Eye-See that I hope conveys the expression of the Jewish Festival of Lights.
I'd like to tie this in with a seemingly unrelated collection of 5 bridge photos.
You'll have to find the connection, if any, yourself...
Some food for thought:
The bridge is inherently symbolic of communication and union, whether it be between heaven and earth or two distinct realms. It may be the passage to reality, or merely a symbol for travel and crossing. In dreams, a bridge symbolizes the passage from one state to another, higher one, like an ascension; it is the end of one cycle and the beginning of another. In many cultures it is the link between what can be perceived and what is beyond perception, or at least a change or desire for change. Can be a test to see who is brave (who will cross).

Blog Guelph: Xmonth Is Here!
Welcome to the silly season.
Before we plow forth, decking our halls and performing various secret Santa rituals, take a moment to congratulate yourself for making it to the other side of November.
Now then - as you know if you live here, December arrived in Guelph in full winter garb on the weekend, nipping noses and covering the town in a thick blanket of snow. As I stood in my driveway Sunday morning assessing the situation, I heard one neighbour exclaim "I love this weather", and another let go with a string of profanity that should have melted the entire mess.
Ho Ho Ho - do not deck your neighbour!
For those of you that missed Downtown Guelph's Winter Lights Fest and our first big dump of the white stuff, today's series documents the whole spectacular scene.
Best viewed with a steaming cup of something delicious and a blanket.
