Blog Guelph: Catholic Hill
Ever since the school board tore down the old Bishop Mac high school to reveal the historic Loretta Convent on Catholic Hill, my entrepreneurial mind has been doing double time. The combination of buildings, location, open space and rich history seems like the perfect combo of raw ingredients for what could be a kick ass international tourist attraction.
As of Friday, this vision finally sprouted some serious roots.
Cultural tourism is a hot commodity in our world today and Guelph is about to step on the bandwagon thanks to a $5 million dollar stash of cash from the province. The coin is earmarked for the formidable task of transforming the Loretto Convent into our new civic museum. Guelph's royal crown is about to get a beautiful new gem.
With this news I'm pleased to start the week off with a 'Imagine Catholic Hill' series of photos shot by a talented slew of our very own cultural creatives.
Best viewed with a challis of medium bodied red wine and bread - say a fresh baguette from Ouderkirk & Taylor at 3 Wyndham Street.
Guelph - it's getting better all the time.

Blog Guelph: The Tail End of Winter
It's Double Photo Gem Friday friends AND the last weekend in March. Blessed April showers can't come soon enough but until they do, we're still Marching through the tail end of winter.
Please hold the course winter warriors. The battle is coming to an end.
But before you press on, here's a couple of important notes to report plus the seed of an idea.
1. Our foto gal Denim has a furry pile of kittens - click this pic to see them.
2. Mayor Karen Farbridge is excited about Earth Hour Guelph. Watch this Guelph Mercury video to hear about her vision.
3. Instead of one hour of candle lit darkness on Saturday night, why not unplug for the whole evening. Could be fun. Might be sexy. Will be historic.

Blog Guelph: Lights OUT
Gather your candles friends,
Saturday, March 29, 8:00 pm is Earth Hour.
According to Earth Hour Dot Org it was,
"Created to take a stand against the greatest threat our planet has ever faced, Earth Hour uses the simple action of turning off the lights for one hour to deliver a powerful message about the need for action on global warming.
About Earth Hour
On March 31 2007, for one hour, Sydney made a powerful statement about the greatest contributor to global warming – coal-fired electricity – by turning off its lights. Over 2.2 million Sydney residents and over 2,100 businesses switched off, leading to a 10.2% energy reduction across the city. What began as one city taking a stand against global warming caught the attention of the world.
In 2008, 24 global cities will participate in Earth Hour at 8pm on March 29. Earth Hour is the highlight of a major campaign to encourage businesses, communities and individuals to take the simple steps needed to cut their emissions on an ongoing basis. It is about simple changes that will collectively make a difference – from businesses turning off their lights when their offices are empty, to households turning off appliances rather than leaving them on standby."
So hey, let's you and I jump on board too.
If you're not a joiner, then don't sign up but maybe just try to power down for the hour.
Click on these 4 dim pics to see where they take you today...
See you in the dark,

Sure.
Wake up to bright sunny skies, the sound of birds and sight of melting banks of snow - as if nothing happened last night - as if winter didn't unleash yet another drunken temper tantrum upon us.
Right.
Experts blame Global Warming, El Nino or natural weather cycles but it all boils down to this.
This winter is a bully.

Blog Guelph: Calling all angels
Yes,
calling all angels for no particular reason other than the assumption that you lot out there in Blogosphere could use one - or maybe even two.
Let's face it, we can all use an angel on our side, sitting pretty on our shoulder every now and then. Even if it is just to beckon the spring thaw, know what I mean?
Sigh.
Sorry to be such a drag, but the endless deep freeze is getting me down. Scattered and still sleepy is just no way to be towards the end of March.
But fear not dearhearts, you will see a difference coming at you REAL soon.
Promise.

Blog Guelph: Spring Colours
It's "not so bad Thursday" today.
One day before the much appreciated statutory holiday, Good Friday - where we witness a mess of chocolate, some wicked fresh colour and the undeniable spirit of spring forcing it's way up and out.
Yes people, it's here!
Spring has (kinda) sprung today.
For proof of this, dig under the piles of snow and you may just spy a tendril or two peeking out from the earth.
Now hush all you naysayers, scroll down and have a look at the indomitable shoots discovered in a particularly warm and sheltered hidey hole in Downtown Guelph just yesterday.
Take that!

Blog Guelph: Guelph Reads
Guelph Reads needs volunteers......
Advertising / Media - Organize advertising and media coverage before, at and after the event. Get people talking and thinking about Guelph Reads!
Chief Elections Officer - Figure out a voting system that's fair, includes live, web-based and other accessible forms of voting. Let democracy prevail!
Programmes - make attractive, cheap and useful programs to hand out at the event. It may be easier to manage if someone writes it and someone else designs and prints it.
Website developer - Keep the website fresh and up to date. Provide some of the web content. Troubleshoot the inevitable problems. Impose order on chaos.
Sound Tech - someone who knows what needs to be done. Get the equipment to and from the venue. Make sure it is properly set up and used. Troubleshoot.
Reception - Help organize refreshments and community tables for the resource reception in the foyer after the debate.
Event volunteers - Show up ready to help on April 26th. Tasks to be announced.
If you can provide your skills to one of these areas or if you want more information about Guelph Reads, please email kimm.khagram@gmail.com with your phone contact info as soon as possible.

Blog Guelph: The Faceoff
Good Tuesday all,
So many things to Blog Guelph about really...Aries is coming, International Goof Off Day too and of course, vernal equinox.
Yes, that would be spring folks.
But just because the calendar claims, it doesn't make it so - just yet.
The beautiful thing about cold and snow as we inch closer to spring, is that it can't last.
So let's laugh in the face of those big flakes that dropped on our heads this morning, shake our fists at the frigid winds that, try as they might, cannot blow us down. Let us remain resolute in our positivity, in our knowledge that this, too, shall pass.
And hey, since winter is indeed still on the ground, let's celebrate the fact that 116 years ago TODAY, Lord Stanley donated a Silvery Cup and hockey was never, ever the same again.
There are none more surprised than myself that today's Blog Guelph six-pack of pics are in honour of Hockey.
So get out there and shoot some stick (is that even a hockey term?) while you still can.

We've endured a record breaking, shovel bending, bruiser of a winter in our stretch of Canada this year. AND yes I know that more snow is inevitable and I'm fully able to see the enormous piles of the white stuff everywhere but - BUT - there is a lovely warmth to the sun as we slide toward this weeks Vernal Equinox.
Spring IS in the air.

Blog Guelph: An Invitation From Tannis
Hi everyone!I just wanted to let you know that Bob at the Woolwich Arms (here in Guelph) has been kind enough to consent to us invading the Wooly to watch the Mali movie there (on Bravo Channel at 9:00pm) tonight (Tuesday, March 11th).
Come on down!
The Woolwich Arms Pub is at 176 Woolwich (519) 836-2875, not far from the intersection of Wyndham St. and Eramosa Streets.
Note from Sue. My calculations: No shovels + Great Pub + beer + big screen + local celebrities + remarkable television program = fun, fun, fun.
Tannis continues: For those who might not know about the movie, Bravo is showing a 48 minute version of the full length feature movie made of our trip to Mali a few years ago. Here's a description:
“Road to Baleya” is a feature documentary film in which Canadian and Malian musicians come together on an extraordinary journey of musical collaboration and friendship.
Produced by award winning Canadian filmmaker Bay Weyman (Spirits of Havana), it follows the interactions between Malian griot Mansa Sissoko and Canadian musicians Lewis Melville, (Guelph) Dave Clark, (T.O.) Dale Morningstar (T.O.) and Tannis Slimmon (Guelph) as they travel to Mansa’s home village of Baleya.
The film explores themes of music as a path to social and economic development, and intersects with the very personal toll exacted by malaria in one of the poorest countries in the world.

Blog Guelph: International Women's Week
Good Tuesday All,
We're right into International Women's Week with this great shot of our local, stone cold, bathing beauties by the inspired Peter Kelly, followed closely by a quartet of his others.
You will surely be tempted to attend some of the events going on around our fair city to honour such an occasion.
Just check out The Guelph Mercury 's fine article from yesterday on things to see, do and celebrate this week. Give it a look, then get out there and revel in being a woman, or loving a woman, knowing a woman, having a more rich and full life because of a woman, or because you came from a woman....you get the picture, non?
gimme a W-O-M-A-N! hip hip hooray!

Blog Guelph: New Perspective
With renewed energy I'm pleased to bring you this first posting of the month of March.
Because you love Guelph, you'll want to check out each and every link in today's 7 post series. Then you'll want to click on the images to see more photos from the local talent.
Yup, we've got up coming events and exciting local services for you to discover, explore and engage in. Plus something silly - always something silly.
To start off - this photo was taken by Greg Norsworthy at the University of Guelph Arboretum. Beautiful in all seasons, the Arb is a fine place to experience springs arrival.

Blog Guelph: The (former) Lafarge Property

If you live in Ward Three/Four and/or if you care about the way our city looks and functions then you will want to get up to speed on the
Located within the Waterloo Avenue, Edinburgh Road, Paisley Road and Hanlon block, the 54 acre vacant former Lafarge land is a natural oasis tucked away in the middle of an established residential area.
The current developer owner is pushing for a change to our official plan so that they can - can you guess - plunk a BIG BOX commercial node in this non commercial space.
My imagination is boggled by this developers lack of vision. I think it's pretty clear that the future is not a BIG BOX.
But besides that and imminently important, think about the impact of 1600 additional shoppers cars and delivery trucks a day traveling along streets designed for residential use and you may start to get the not so pretty picture.
Guelph citizens have organized the Howitt Park Neighbourhood Residents' Association, with an excellent website, which I strongly encourage you to visit, read and then sign the petition.
Or perhaps you'd like to dive right in with both feet by attending tonight's meeting. City Council is holding a public meeting to receive submissions from the public on these Official Plan and Zoning By-law Amendment applications.
Meeting Date: March 3, 2008
Location: Council Chambers, City Hall, 59 Carden Street
Time: 7:00 p.m.
The excellent Brian Fray cartoon used with permission.

Blog Guelph: Guelph Community Car Co-op
Did you know that Guelph has a Community Car Co-op with a fleet of 2 cars to rent?
From the website: The community car co-op was started by GIRC in 1999 to help Guelph citizens gain access to a car while reducing the number of cars on the road. With membership to the co-op, a person simply calls ahead to book use of the car, picks it up and drops it off in our downtown parking spot, and is billed on a monthly basis for their use. A fully refundable share deposit is required for membership, plus a $15 application fee. Members are billed an hourly and a per kilometre rate for their use, which covers fuel, insurance, cleaning and maintenance.
For more information and application details, call 519-241-2886, or contact the GIRC office (info@girc.org OR 519.489.4594)
