Blog Guelph: art on the street 2008
photo by Vic Kirsch of The Guelph MercuryThankful Thursday everyone!
Thankful - but why you ask?
Well, there are a kabillion reasons to be thankful when you really put your mind to it, just take a look around you.
(Enough of the obvious DTL....)
I, for one, am exceedingly grateful for the success of this year's art on the street Exhibition & Sale. I am grateful that it didn't rain. I am grateful for the abundance of diverse and talented artists lining Quebec Street this past Saturday. I am grateful for the gleeful children rushing delightedly about fuelled by the power of being allowed in the middle of the road AND soft-serve ice cream. I am grateful for the talent of the musicians on stage in St. George's Square, the magician and Caribbean Cuisine for selling delicious doubles...
Truly there is so much more to be grateful for but, truth be told, I'm mostly grateful that it's over.
Here are some shots of the day.
If you missed it, you have my deepest sympathy.

'Tis gray, damp and coolish on this Wednesday in Wellington County. Hundreds of volunteers and service people are preparing Guelph Lake Island for this year's Hillside Festival and organizers are praying for clear skies and sunshine.
Just in case the Guelph weather Gawds peruse Blog Guelph, I'm posting a six pack of yummy yellow photos to encourage said Gawds to dry things up a tad and get back to the business of dishing up some summer sunshine.

Blog Guelph: Hillside Festival - Get Ready for the 25th!
It's the moody, damp Monday of Hillside Week and the several thousand lucky ticket holders and tribe of volunteers are gearing up for this year's 25th Hillside Festival.
To help stoke the fire of excitement, I've dug up a dozen pics from last year's fest - a hot, dry affair if I recall correctly. Given this summer's weather thus far, we may not be so blessed with dryness this year. Prepare yourselves accordingly my friends.
Tickets are still available for Sunday night should you be free and flush. Grab yourself one at this link. And, the Guelph Mercury is doing an on-line Hillside poll at this link.
I have fond memories of the first Hillside Festival, an intimate, extraordinarily fun, one day affair held at Riverside Park with about 200 attendees. Now thousands of festival goers pack Guelph Lake Island for three straight days of non-stop action. I'm proud to have helped lay the groundwork for this fabulous Guelph event.
Enjoy the ANTICIPATION Hillside lovers. Water-proof your tent. And be sure to visit next week for a slew of post festival pics.

Blog Guelph: Simple Beauty
Greetings from the middle of the week which also happens to be the middle of the month and just slightly past the middle of the year.
In celebration of all these middles, I'm dedicating today's bouquet of posts to simple beauty by offering a photo essay on the Daisy - sometimes referred to as the English Daisy or the Common Daisy.
There's nothing quite like frolicking in a field of white daisies. Depending on your vintage you may be inspired to seek your true loves direction by plucking petals and chanting - he loves me, he loves me not. Or you may notice the melody of the 1892 hit single Bicycle Built For Two breezing through your brain. Regardless - daisies bring out the best in those that love them.
But all is not sweet in today's Blog Guelph world. As a public service, I'm ending today's effort with a plea for information about a 'spill in Silver Creek'. Someone dumped a whole lot of something bad in our waterway and citizen creek lover Ian Thomas wants to know who done it!
Otherwise, today's posts are best viewed in real life. May they inspire an outing.

Daisy, Daisy, give me you answer true.
I'm half-crazy all for the love of you.

Upon the seat
Of a bicycle built for two.

To the Daisy
by William Wordsworth
In youth from rock to rock I went
From hill to hill, in discontent
Of pleasure high and turbulent,
Most pleas'd when most uneasy;
But now my own delights I make,
My thirst at every rill can slake,
And gladly Nature's love partake
Of thee, sweet Daisy!

The Daisy follows soft the Sun
by Emily Dickinson
The Daisy follows soft the Sun --
And when his golden walk is done --
Sits shyly at his feet --
He -- waking -- finds the flower there --
Wherefore -- Marauder -- art thou here?
Because, Sir, love is sweet!
We are the Flower -- Thou the Sun!
Forgive us, if as days decline --
We nearer steal to Thee!
Enamored of the parting West --
The peace -- the flight -- the Amethyst --
Night's possibility!

Blog Guelph: Silver Creek Gets Dumped!
Sadly we end today's posting with this story from photog Ian Thomas.
"When I woke up this morning, I noticed that my creek seemed to be a funny colour.... thinking nothing of it (I thought it was just a trick of the sunlight) I went off to work. When I got home from work my creek was definitely a funny colour.... and there were environmental clean-up trucks all over my parking lot."
"SOMEBODY (or group/corporation, what-have-you) has dumped tonnes of some sort of waste into the sewer system that feeds into Silver-Creek (and the Speed River). The clean-up crew has not told me yet what the substance is (but, at least they are not roaming around in haz-mat suits).........."
If you know anything about this 'situation' please leave a comment below.

I've chosen to feature a dozen photos taken in the last calendar year by DL. As you scroll through the posts, you will notice that Lynn likes getting close-up and personal with her subject matter. Her ability to focus gives her Flickr photostream the intimacy of a visual diary. Upon inspection you'll likely grasp that she lives an artistically rich life in downtown Guelph, that she loves much, is loved by many and largely contributes to the overall beauty of our world every chance she gets - like with her baby, 'Art on the Street', happening this Saturday, on Quebec Street.
You'll note that Lynnie chin chin has funky penmanship too.
But wait - there's more.
It's been just over a year since Lynn joined me on the bridge of the good ship Blog Guelph. I was sinking in a sea of seriously declining health coupled by the confusion of a surreal home invasion by three red squirrels when Lynn offered her help. Despite being totally wigged out, I had enough sense to accept her offer with gratitude - gigantic mounds of gratitude.
I love Downtown Lynn.
Do leave comments. Do be inspired. Do be whatever you dream. And do be your most beautiful self - inside and out.

Blog Guelph: Beauty
Merry Monday friends. Thanks for dropping by on this breezy, sun streaked day of summer in Guelph, Ontario Canada..
This entire weeks posts are dedicated to beauty, beauty and even more beauty.
Russian author Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky once said that "beauty will save the world". Alan Clement, author of Instinct for Freedom suggests that "people, art, a poem, a smile, a photograph - anything that provokes or stimulates us to inhabit a new aspect of reality is beautiful". Dictionary dude Webster offers, "beauty is the quality or aggregate of qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses or pleasurably exalts the mind or spirit".
I say beauty is a beautiful thing.
Look closely at your world today. Seek the beauty in all that you encounter. Then find the space to add beauty in generous quantities.
Best viewed with a brave, open heart.

Blog Guelph: Stop and Wait, Bokeh
Hello All,
Welcome to the week's roundup!
A couple of things to hype about this coming weekend.
(There's probably a kabillion events to mention actually, but I'm up to my "Lynny chin-chin" with the 6th Annual art on the street, Saturday July 19th in Downtown Guelph, so am somewhat fuzzy around the informational edges - apologies.)
More on art on the street down further, and thanks Sue for the whole lynny chin-chin thing.
Addendum! Blogger is being a drag. I cannot upload the image for this event - stay tuned next week for news...
First things first now...

The Guelph Mercury : Of Gasoline and Gardens - A Look at the Future
Published on Tuesday, June 17, 2008
by Sam Turton
Modern industrial society runs on oil and its derivative, gasoline.
All the plastic or synthetic items around us, from clothing and computers to appliances and tools, are made from oil. Almost all of them were manufactured with machines that either run on oil or on electricity that was produced by oil. Each one of these items was shipped to a store — which we drove to — in vehicles that run on oil.
Cheap oil and combustion engines drive our global society. They are what separate us from the person-powered, hand-hewn, land-centered life that our predecessors lived barely 100 years ago.
Although many of us believe our modern lifestyles will be maintained by alternative energy sources, many experts disagree.
At the Guelph Civic League “Amazing Possibilities” conference two years ago, James Howard Kunstler, author of “The Long Emergency” and “World Made By Hand,” solemnly declared the raw, immediate power of the gasoline engine cannot be replaced by wind, solar, electricity or green fuels at the degree or volume required by our machine-driven society. In other words, we can only run at our present level with oil — cheap oil — and the days of cheap oil are over.
The cost of oil and gas will continue to rise because supply is limited and demand is increasing. As the price of oil goes up, the price of everything else connected to oil goes up as well. We are holding onto a balloon that is pulling us off the ground. There is only one thing to do — let go before it’s too late.
How do we let go of oil? Is it possible? How can we even consider such a life?
My son’s grandmother, Theresa, grew up on Cape Breton Island. Her father was a dory fisherman and they lived in a wood-heated home without electricity and with a big garden out back.
They were “off the grid” long before it was hip. Virtually nothing in their lives was dependent on oil, complex machinery, or global trade. Theresa proudly told me the Great Depression never affected their family because they had more than enough food — enough, in fact, to give to the “poor folk” in town.
Theresa’s family had the essentials — food, shelter, family, and community — and a rich culture as fiddlers and artisans. They lived by hand not by machine. They lived locally not globally. If you live simply and don’t move things over great distances, you don’t need oil.
My own grandparents tended vegetable gardens and bought the rest of their food from market farmers and local vendors. Now, as gasoline goes up, these sensible traditions will come back. It’s doable, active, cheaper, and provides healthy food that tastes much better than the prematurely picked, mass-produced, boxed-up, trucked-in items we pay more and more for.
Another solution is CSA, or Community Supported Agriculture. This is a system where consumers support a farmer and benefit in the harvest. You buy a share of the production in advance and receive a box of fresh, in-season vegetables every week. Community members get organic produce and local farmers are financially supported to start each season.
I have a small “kitchen garden” in my backyard and a larger plot with neighbours in the community gardens at the Ignatius Jesuit Centre. The bountiful fields of the Ignatius CSA are all around us. Information on this and other CSAs can be found online at CSA Farms. Each farm is unique, and in addition to vegetables, some farmers offer eggs, poultry, meat, herbs, and honey. Scrumptious.
The price of gasoline is going up. I’ll see you in the garden.

Blog Guelph: Excuse me, ma'am
'Tis sweltering hot in town these past few days - so in the spirit of being cool, what better time to feature Guelph's most public and controversial family, the naked statue in St. George's Square.
Installed in 1983, The Family made serious waves in it's early days of living downtown. In fact I'm told by a secret source that our mayor still gets the occasional crabby letter about the nude trio - twenty five year's later.
So - you might guess that I'm recommending 'starkers' as the best way to view today's seven pack of picks. Even better if you stand IN a fountain.

Blog Guelph: William McElcheran - Sculptor
Here's what I dug up about the artist.
"Born in Hamilton, McElcheran received a scholarship to study at the Ontario College of Art. In 1948, he graduated at the top of his class and was awarded the Lieutenant Governor's Medal.
During his early years as a woodworker, McElcheran focused on liturgical art as he began carving church furniture and pews. He went on to become chief designer for Bruce Brown and Brisely architects where he helped co-ordinate the planning and designing of churches and university buildings. His countless stations of the cross, bas-reliefs, and stain glass windows can still be seen today in churches in Toronto, Hamilton, and Guelph. As he began to seek other clients his work became more secularized, which led to his creation of the businessman. He spent little time in Canada, moving to Italy in 1975 to live in Pietrasanta to be close to the foundry and artisans skilled in bronze casting.
In the early 1980’s his work became the subject of controversy after he created a life-size bronze depicting an unclothed mother, father, and child for the city of Guelph. He slept very little, preferring to devote as much time as possible to his art."

Blog Guelph: A Field of Dreams
Made in Guelph
I first met todays featured photog many years ago at the inaugural Guelph Arts Festival which I co-directed. He boldly presented a very personal poem at The Diana Downtown. I knew from that moment on what a gem of a man he is; seemingly quiet in nature, yet brave and outspoken. A writer and visual artist indeed.
I think the testimonial on his flickr site says it best:
"He has a gifted eye for composition, and a profound feel for nature..."
So sit right back, with an eye to the beauty around you and view these 10 serene shots for our Made in Guelph today.

Blog Guelph: The WalMart Web
I've never been in our WalMart. I'm just not into buying cheap crap that's made to become obsolete in six months. And I'm into supporting the local economy - given it supports me.
With that disclosure in plain view, allow me to tell you why Walmart is in the news again.
They want to expand - double actually - by adding a huge grocery store. Which will inevitably mean that any of our smaller grocery stores - like Eramosa Zehrs for instance - will likely go the way of the dodo and we'll all be driving to the north end of the city.
So much for revitalizing the downtown, driving less and supporting our economy.
Other opinions about the proposed WalMart expansion can be read here. The council meeting to VOTE on the issue is tonight at 7pm, at 59 Carden Street - City Hall.

Blog Guelph: State Of Confusion
Made in Guelph
Last, you say?
Fear not mateys, Blog Guelph's once-a-week theme show featuring a singular photoartist is moving to Tuesdays this summer. To keep it fresh. To allow us to bring you the weekend updates on Thursdays from now on. To keep you on your happy, bare toes.
So today we'll take a gander at our fabulous Peter Kelly .
He's the King of black and white. The Emperor of film. The Ambassador of Guelph Photography Club and even (she says with great Guelph pride) the published author of The Last Stand:A Journey Through the Ancient Cliff-Face Forest of the Niagara Escarpment.
He is, no doubt, so much more too but you'll have to see for yourself.
These 8 shots are just a wee slice of what Peter's photostream has to offer so clickety-click on each pic to delve further into his world.
You'll be mighty mighty glad you did.
