Blog Guelph: Through a lens, briefly

, originally uploaded by PaulaRussell.

It's Thursday folks, and clearly my "uploading slowly all afternoon" was kiboshed yesterday.
Forcefields beyond my control really.
So, a big apology for the tease of things to come that didn't.
Ms. Blogger, Sir Internet and little ol' me will endeavour to remedy this for you today.

Stupendous shots from woodsy women, scary shots to get you in the Halloween mood and others will be forthcoming shortly.

I promise.

Welcome to Wednesday's substitute blog.

Don't be mean to me now.

Our superstylin' Sue had to remove herself from the blogosphere today so I'm stepping in...

Thought I'd carry on with my theme of yesterday to round out Women's History Month and post a pile of woodsy shots from our stellar Guelph women photographers.

Stay tuned as I slowly upload one here and there over the afternoon...

Blog Guelph: The world through the eye of a horse

Made in Guelph

Given that we're winding down Women's History Month, I thought it was important to feature a female photographer for today's version of Made in Guelph.

Crevicehead , AKA Erin, claims to have just picked up her camera recently.
Just one or two clicks on her photostream and you can hardly believe this is true...

She possesses the keen, sensitive eye of a pro - to which these 6 attest.

Thanks Erin!

Till The End My Friends, originally uploaded by ~Stingrays~.

Good Monday ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to the last week of weather wild October.

Today's half dozen shots pay tribute to the power and detail of a well composed close-up. I'm not so good at technical photographic speak, but I do know what I like in an image. Close-ups usually get the nod.

The Guelph Photographic Club is meeting Tuesday, October 28th, 2008; at 7:00 pm at The Woolwich Arms. Half of the back room will be reserved for the gathering. This club is dedicated to helping beginners and intermediate photographers improve their skills through regular get-togethers, general discussion and field trips.

Oh - and beer drinking too.

All are welcome.

Blog Guelph: What's on your fridge?

what's on your fridge?, originally uploaded by vw-busman.

Greetings Friends of Friday.

Today's single pic packs a creative punch for you to wrestle with if you so choose. Clever Mr. VW Busman has posted the following "What's on Your Fridge PHOTO CHALLENGE" for you to play with - along with this example of his rather busy fridge door.

How To Play

1. Go to your kitchen and take a picture of your fridge. Don't try to move stuff around or prep the photo, just shoot.
2. Make sure some of the stuff in readable and it can be identified as a fridge. ie. logo, handle, etc.
3. Post that picture with NO editing.
4. Post these instructions with your picture.

Then, add it to the group:
www.flickr.com/groups/mymessyfridge. And tag it with "mymessyfridge"

Have fun - be fun - enjoy your weekend.

Blog Guelph: Golden Years

Golden Abstract, originally uploaded by kirk white.

A Golden Thursday to you all.

There's much to do on this upcoming gorgeous weekend - and please note the positivity boldly staring down November....

You could go see a Golden Oldie in the form of a play at The Guelph Little Theatre entitled,
" Come Back to the 5 & dime Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean".

Or perhaps be enchanted by the musical stylings of our local laddie, James Gordon playing tomorrow night a the River Run Centre.

Myself?
I think I might try to eke out a moment of silence ( golden, right?) immediately after I listen to this Bowie classic, Golden Years.

That night was the turning-point in the season. We had gone to bed in summer, and we awoke in autumn; for summer passes into autumn in some imaginable point of time, like the turning of a leaf.

Gathering Leaves
by Robert Frost

Spades take up leaves
No better than spoons,
And bags full of leaves
Are light as balloons.

I make a great noise
Of rustling all day
Like rabbit and deer
Running away.

But the mountains I raise
Elude my embrace,
Flowing over my arms
And into my face.

I may load and unload
Again and again
Till I fill the whole shed,
And what have I then?

Next to nothing for weight,
And since they grew duller
From contact with earth,
Next to nothing for color.

Next to nothing for use.
But a crop is a crop,
And who's to say where
The harvest shall stop?

Blog Guelph: Autumn Maples

morning fall colour 03, originally uploaded by D J England.

AUTUMN MAPLES
By Archibald Lampman (1861-1899)

The thoughts of all the maples who shall name,
When the sad landscape turns to cold and gray?
Yet some for very ruth and sheer dismay,
Hearing the northwind pipe the winter's name,
Have fired the hills with beaconing clouds of flame;
And some with softer woe that day by day,
So sweet and brief, should go the westward way,
Have yearned upon the sunset with such shame
That all their cheeks have turned to tremulous
rose;
Others for wrath have turned to rusty red,
And some that knew not either grief or dread,
Ere the old year should find its iron close,
Have gathered down the sun's last smiles acold,
Deep, deep, into their luminous hearts of gold.

Blog Guelph: Hoodride Bug

hoodride bug, originally uploaded by vw-busman.

Made in Guelph
a Blog Guelph invention

A frigid Tuesday all.
I guess that's that then, huh?
The leaves are being blown away by the malevolent November winds.

I think I just saw snow.

No more bare feet, no more G and T's on any patio anytime soon.
Sigh.

To warm you up, however, we delve into the wondrous world of vw-busman, AKA Chris Iwanowski.
You really should click on his photonom above to read a pinch about who the man really is and to be led further astray by his blog, Busman Chronicles, as well as his web2 roll.
(Is that some kind of sushi?)
Man, this guy is wired!

Avoiding the tech talk myself, I'll tell you this much:
Chris likes anything VW.
He has 2 great kids and an awesome partner -who are but 4 dogs in a creative stew of a business called Barking Dog Studios.
He's recently come out on top of a treacherous couple of years.
He'll photograph anything and everything. And well.
He's a positron, a bit of a nerd (but in a good way, in the way other nerds look up to...), an intelligent and passionate community dude.
But most of all, I like Chris because we share a love of all things pie.
Tis true.

Clickety click on this pile of nine that barely scrapes the surface.

Blog Guelph: Letting Go

Untitled, originally uploaded by Chris [Clare Photography].

Greetings on this fresh, drab October Monday.

If ever there was a season for mediating on the practice of letting go - the fall of fall would be it.

It is well understood by meditators world wide that our attachment to everything staying the same is at the top of the list of 'things that cause misery in our lives'. Cultivating an attitude of 'so be it' releases our grip which in turn opens the door to fresh energy and a more realistic experience. Life is dynamic. Holding on does not make it less so. Instead our holding causes tension and stress.

Letting go - Letting go - Letting go.

Today's six pic series serves to illustrate nature's big let go, or in some cases the appearance of holding on to the bitter end despite the odds.

Should you want to formalize your own meditation experience, check out the Guelph based Insight Meditation Retreat Schedule.

Blog Guelph: Guelph Votes

trainstation1, originally uploaded by Rob Bowman.

Happy post federal election and welcome to the Wednesday edition of Blog Guelph.

Seems like only yesterday that Canada was run by a minority Conservative government doesn't it?

Here in Guelph voter turnout saw 58,895 of 88,842 registered electors (66.3%) exercised their duty and right to mark a ballot. This means 29,947 Guelphites did not.

How lame is that!

The following 10 posts will give you a breakdown of the candidate by candidate results. For further analysis - visit the Mercury Guelph Votes Blog.

Blog Guelph: Great Full Life

In Bloom HBW!, originally uploaded by Davey S.

One Shot Friday

Here's a beautiful pic from Davey S that I think exemplifies Thanksgiving and the season that surrounds us.

Thanksgiving, Canadian Style anyway, is my fave of all the statutory holidays given that it's all about gratitude and food.
Simple.
Lovely.
Yummy.

This time last year I had the privilege of sitting in our wonderful Sue Richard's backyard, in the hot hot heat, eating wee cornish hens and pie.
I'm grateful for that memory.
I'm also thankful for my family, my partner, my friends and my rich, full life.
I'm thankful for Blog Guelph and hope you are too.

Happiness this long weekend,

So, whether you "Vote against" or "Vote for", just vote folks.
Exercise that muscle.

'Tis Thanksgiving too, lest we forget.
So eat, drink, love and be loved this long and lovely weekend all!

I'm most thankful myself.

Blog Guelph: Made in Guelph - Greg Denton

Potato Head Blank, originally uploaded by Gregory Clifford Denton.

Miss Lynnie is off conferencing today which leaves me with the pleasure of presenting this week's Made in Guelph series - this time with a participatory twist.

Greg "Cliffie" Denton describes himself as a "visual artist, university art instructor, musician, community radio host and bookseller." I'll add - man about town and very funny dude. And - he certainly knows how to use his head.

So here's the twist.

Download this photo, draw a face on it, then email it to Greg at gdenton@sentex.ca and he'll add it to his potato head set.

To get you inspired, I've posted 6 renditions of Mr. P.H as offered by various folk.

There yah go. Have fun, be fun and use your imagination kids.

Blog Guelph: The Friday Ryder

It's been a while since we checked in on our pal The Giant Vermin and his 365 Dog Days project of his K9 squeeze Ryder so here yah go. Ryder was the Official Winner of the 3rd Annual Swamp Swim Competition - as shown above in our Friday Ryder.

Speaking of winners, me thinks the Green Party's Elizabeth May kicked some serious boy butt in last nights federal election leaders debate. If you're curious, cbc.ca is loaded with analysis.

Have a happy weekend boys and girls!

Blog Guelph: Romancing the Guitar

my wall, originally uploaded by Accordion Chick.

Hello Thursday folk,

I'll get right to the point then...
todays five fotos feature the loveliness of the guitar in order to highlight a new project/event in the G-spot known as The Guelph Guitar Project. Inspired by Jowi Taylor's (et al) "Six String Nation", which tipped it's creative hat quite literally to slices of Canadian history, the Guelph version of this instrument will possess bits and pieces of natural refuse that simply refused to be tossed away and forgotten.
Read this great article for all the deets and try to get out to The River Run Centre tomorrow night for the showcasing event, "Making History Sing".

You'll be delighted, by the sounds of it....

Oh, and hey! I wouldn't be Downtown Lynn if I didn't remind you to click on the pretty green poster to your right. Dig-In Downtown returns this fall with flavour!

There's my bit.

Blog Guelph: Layers of Life

3 layers, originally uploaded by shzy.

I have five lovely images for you to soak your soul in today - all reflective of our beautiful artistic autumn landscape.

Our creatively constipated Prime Minister, Steven Harper has been taking a few swings at Canada's cultural sector while on his nasty campaign trail. Apparently he believes the majority of Canadian's don't groove to art.

If Harper could only remove his black and white mindset, he'd realize that our lives are a work of art - and that everyone everywhere creates their reality everyday.

Weltschmerz lovers get a treat today - Gareth just posted a new strip.

We all create. We are all creations. Art is everywhere.
