Blog Guelph: Royal City Sunset
Unless we're lined up for a fast miracle, the much coveted 'January thaw of 2009' is but a dream. Yes winter drones on dear ones - snow on snow with a dash of snow is ours to fight or frolic in - your choice.
Personally, I'm doing my best to learn the art of hibernation. I stockpiled a porch full of firewood, a billion dvd's and a whack of dark chocolate. Instead of poking my head out of my home to check on winter's status, I dip into the pool of Guelph photo's.
Yup - it's still a deep freeze out there!! See for yourself......

Blog Guelph: She's as Cold as Ice
Hello?
:: 'Tis a gorgeous day, yet a tad uninviting at the same time. :: I believe it may still be the week of Chinese New Year. :: Last time I checked it was January in Guelph.
So you'll have to excuse my unsureness, but I appear to be having a brain FREEZE a the mo.
I'm all out of focus so to speak, thus, today's Made in Guelph won't simply hone in on one fab photographer so much as it will take a closeup at the deep freeze evident in these chilly climes.
Real close.

Buffy: Want beer. Like beer. Beer good.
It's true. In Buffy's case it was evil beer, but in the case of F&M Brewery brewmaster George Eagleson, it's genius. A coffee beer combo just seems too perfect. I like beer, and I like coffee, and judging by Guelph's photography pools, they do too.
So, you've got Planet Bean Coffee partnering with F&M Brewery to make Stonehammer Oatmeal Coffee Stout, and get this, you can try a sampling today at the Woolwich Arms between 4-6pm.

Blog Guelph: 16 Things . . .
I looked out the window this morning and the sky was blazing. Thinking I had a few minutes to look through Guelph's multitude of photos for a sun theme, I took my time before taking my own photo of the sky. I did not have minutes. I had seconds. The sun disappeared before I uploaded the first photo to the blog. I hope someone out there in Guelphland caught it.
I dropped the sun theme, as you can see, and decided on something better. :)
Also, a shout out to Dave for sticking to and finishing his 366 project. Yay!

Blog Guelph: Shooting for the Stars
Welcome to Tuesday's
Made in Guelph
If you could tear yourselves away from Obama-Fest for just a tiny wee moment, I'd love to share with you some lovely pics.
I hear you though, why should you?
You want to join in on the worlds collective "phew" and "YAY", I know...but let's look at today's M.i.G. this way - as a gift to him from the frigid yet beautiful North. As an offering of education and peace and partnership, n'est-ce-pas?
Today Blog Guelph will illustrate our Canadian tenacity in the face of a deep freeze and at the very same time ooze the warmth and welcome we feel....
Who better to visually describe our visions of ice than today's photog, Clinton Tonge I say?
So take a gander at this bakers half-dozen and see if we can't collectively celebrate a future of becoming unstuck with Obama.
All together now,
all together now....

Blog Guelph: Eyes
I'm going to deviate from my chirpy Guelph hugging mantra today in order to offer a pithy update about my ongoing relationship with Parkinson's Disease.
Folks have been asking but my limited energy and ridiculously slow typing ability makes it too challenging to respond one on one. Besides that, my nature leans toward a 'half full glass' attitude at the worst of times - which is still the case - yet seems to ring hollow when looking into the worried eyes of a friend. It's hard to communicate how much PD sucks AND be positive at the same time.
So here goes - Parkinson's is a horrible drag to live with and yet there's still a silver lining to each day.
Despite being deeply challenged by the myriad symptoms I navigate daily, I continue to hold to the pioneering PD recovery course that I've been following for the last 14 months AND I'm even more convinced than ever that I will indeed fully recover from this rotten disease.
I'm humbled and profoundly grateful for the enormous amount of support that lands in my lap daily. It fills my heart, reduces me to tears and helps keep my glass filled.
Parkinson's has shown me how blessed I truly am. It surely does take a village to cure a disease. Thank you sweet Guelph.

Blog Guelph: Eramosa River
This morning I have a wonderful interview with Van Waffle. If I were you, I would go get a coffee or a beverage of your choice, and sit back to read Van's thoughtful answers.
1. Have you always been interested in photography, and can
you remember when you first picked up a camera to document
your surroundings?
My parents were avid hobbyists and nature lovers. As a child I received encouragement in all kinds of creative pursuits, photography being one of them. I had a simple camera from the age of 10 or so. But it was my deep fascination with plants, particularly wildflowers and herbs, that drew me into photography.
I started reading, identifying, collecting and drawing plants. The summer I was 16 we went on a camping trip through the Rockies: my parents, my brother and his wife, and me. My sister-in-law was seven months pregnant, and the five of us were cramped together for two weeks in my brother's Jimmy. I was perpetually sullen, but the landscape left a lasting impression on me. Wherever we stopped I scrambled around the rocks and alpine meadows with my field guide. I didn't have time to draw, but my parents had given me a Canon AE-1, and Dad loaned me his macro lens, so I took a picture of every wildflower I found. The recording power of photography crystallized for me then.
In the late 1980s, as a journalist and newspaper reporter, I had an opportunity to develop my photography skills in other directions, but that first love of plants remains evident in my work.

2. What three things would you say influences your
photography?
I can't identify any favourite photographers, but my creative process has been influenced by a number of nature writers. Three who come to mind are Annie Dillard, Aldo Leopold and Barry Lopez.
Dillard's beautiful memoir, Pilgrim At Tinker Creek, helped me survive a crisis in 1996 when my marriage broke down, and I left a conservative church life and came out as a gay man. I don't necessarily agree with Dillard's theology, but her writing is exquisite, and her practise of observing nature to apprehend personal truth has become part of my lifestyle. I began treating the Eramosa River as a personal metaphor for life. Walking through Guelph, you can't observe where the water arises or flows into the ocean, but you can see a few metres in either direction. Life is like that: you never get a good view of the whole thing. I visit the river as many days of the year as possible to observe its moods and habits. At first I only recorded my pilgrimage in poetry and essays. But in 2003 the internet community inspired me to begin using photography to illustrate my blog.
Naturalists who travel widely can build a wealth of knowledge and experience. I haven't had the luxury of much travel, but I think Leopold and Lopez both mentioned that travel does not provide deep intimacy with the landscape. You have to experience a place repeatedly during every season and every hour of the day to know it the way lovers know one another. Leopold's A Sand County Almanac could be considered a love story. In writing and photography I aspire to portray the distinctive qualities of light, landscape and vegetation of a place.
But photography can also be a handicap to the nature writer. When you take a camera on a walk you look for forms and structures that translate readily to a photograph. You tend to concentrate on visual details and miss the big picture. You neglect the other senses: hearing, touch, smell and taste, not to mention intuitive perceptions that transcend the senses. Lopez was an accomplished nature photographer who gave up photography to concentrate on writing. I am too enamoured of light, texture and colour to make that sacrifice, but I recognize the problem and look for ways to get around it. Recently I've begun regarding photography as a special mode of interaction with nature, the way religious people use prayer or acts of charity to approach the divine.

3. So, I must come clean and say I've been a lurker on your
live journal for a long time. You have a natural gift with
words. Have you thought of combining the two in a book or a
show?
Thank you, and that's an excellent question. Except for my blog, the writing and photography keep developing in different directions. I like having several distinct projects underway. Photography is a morning and summer activity for me, and it's intuitive, open-ended and refreshing. Writing is more evening and winter; compelling, goal-oriented and agonizing. Each provides a change of pace from the other. Unless I make a conscious decision to combine them, it might not happen.
A published book would be ambitious, a coffee table thing, and I need to become famous somehow before I could market the idea, unless I tried self-publishing. But a show might be more feasible: I have considered creating small pieces, maybe even unique handmade books combining images with prose or poetry.
This is a picture taken several years ago of my daughters, Marian and Brenna, who I love to photograph, and they have been good sports about it over the years.

4. What are you hoping to accomplish in the year 2009 in
regards to your photography?
I'd like to learn PhotoShop and save up for a DSLR camera (currently I use a Canon Powershot A620). A major writing project has been grabbing my attention lately, but I've also had in mind working toward a photography show, or a booth at Art In The Street next summer. Just now I rely on photography to keep me sane during periods of concentration. It's a constructive excuse to escape from my musty garret.

5. What are your three favourite photos, and any thoughts
on each?
That is a hard choice.
This is my younger daughter, Brenna, during the holidays last month near the house where I grew up beside Lake Erie. The light is exquisite and you can practically feel the wind. Brenna is an expert beachcomber, and the found hardhat adds a quirky touch.

I am a water creature. When I'm not photographing reflections or ripples, I'm frequently looking at water in its other incarnations: dew, mist, frost and snow. Another good thing the daily journal made me do was walk and photograph in all kinds of light: first thing in the morning before work, later afternoon, even after dark. I'm not a morning person, so without disciplined creative habits I would miss opportunities like this.

This is the Eramosa River. Last year I walked and maintained a daily photo journal from April 28 to December 21. One of the best things about the experience was it forced be to do photography in all kinds of weather. Creative rituals force us to grow and experience the world in new ways. I spent forever standing under an umbrella hoping to capture an appealing pattern of raindrops. I like the movement and subtle colour palette here.
Thank you, Van. Let us know when the photography show happens. I'll be there!

Blog Guelph: Out and About
Good Monday friends.
It's cabin fever time round town dear hearts so Blog Guelph is pleased to offer today's series of encouraging winter posts - proof that some of us still venture outdoors.
Those of you decidedly glued to your couch, here's a true Canadian contest for you to participate in - while still staying warm and snug in your humble home.
Beginning today, CBC Radio 2 invites Canadians to help select the top “49 songs from north of the 49th parallel” that would best define our country to the incoming U.S. President Barack Obama. You fine Guelphite can help whittle down the playlist by VOTING RIGHT HERE.
The rules claim daily casting is acceptable and listening samples are waiting to fill your week with music.
Go crazy AND have fun.

So, it had to happen, right? I am sick. I think I did pretty well considering the children with colds, I'd been around all last month.
Today is a good day to be sick. I don't have to go anywhere, and the snow is falling, and the bunny is better, (he was sick last night), and I have a stack of books and movies to go through.
It looks pretty out there, but I doubt the driving is going to be fun today. Take care, everyone.

Sniffle, sniffle, cough. Happy New Year! Sniffle.
I've been seeing a lot of blogs doing a review of photos that were favourites of theirs, and summing up the past year. I wouldn't know where to start with Blog Guelph. Every month here is jammed pack with creativity. I do wonder what your favourites are, though (your own photos, and others). You can leave a comment here or email me.

P.S., Those around me are sniffling and sneezing. Last night I chopped ginger, and lemon and brewed it all up with some honey. Surprisingly, it was drank and liked.
I do hope your new year is healthy and happy, and filled with everything you love to do.
