I have started to think about gifts again, and I see that a bunch of Guelphites have Etsy shops. I did a quick search and found these sellers on the Guelph geolocator. I recognize Claygrl and SamiK, and I'll be going through the rest of the sellers. I'll post a gift guide on Monday!

November is shaping up to be my new favourite month. I did a double take today on one of my plants outside. It's never looked so good, and green. I hope there won't be bad repercussions later. I am looking forward to snow, and speaking of snow, there probably won't be any for the Elora Santa Claus Parade this Saturday at 6pm, beginning at South Street.

I am pleased to showcase Nick's work which is as refreshing as Fall morning air. I don't know Nick beyond his images and his comments but what I do know is that you can feel the enthusiasm he has for photography in each of his photographs. He seems to compose his subjects in such a way as to provide a context supported by excitement. I am particularly drawn to his not-entirely-conventional use of focus and how it works to impart as sense of visual fog into his images. He really uses this focus to distill the image down to the important elements and to inject a huge amount of feeling and mood into the scene. Fog serves a powerful tool in his images, maybe by silencing the other elements, quieting the world around the subject while allowing the essential sounds to emerge from the otherwise cacophony of detail. Nick is a sensitive observer of his world and really seems to delight in the visual treasures he teases out of subjects most of us likely pass right by. Nick, your work is encouraging and energetic, and your enthusiasm is a huge boon for your own images and for those that make images around you. In your images, I find it very easy to place myself. Thank you so much for sharing and I look forward to following your stream.

Blog Guelph: Dingle Peninsula - Grass Waves
Made in Guelph - Dave Noyle
Today I am excited to feature the work of Dave Noyle. I honestly cannot articulate exactly what it is about Dave's work that I find so compelling, but I do encourage you to think about this as you look at his images. Dave has an unbelievably sensitive and profound use of sky, light, and fog. While some photographers race out on a foggy morning to excitedly snap off a few pics, Dave seems to embrace the interface between the environmental and artistic. Whether it is fog, or mist, or dense low-hanging cloud, he seems to work these factors into amazing, powerful, and engaging anchors for the other elements of his image. Maybe that is what is so compelling, that he photographs these features in such a way that they become integral to the narrative in that they are supportive of other aspects, and not simply superficially beautiful. Dave also seems to enjoy the consequences of light, introduced or otherwise, and handles toning, colouring, and exposure with great ease. I feel like Dave makes images because he responds to what he observes, not because he feels like he has to, or he should, or something looks pretty. He is another photographer that realizes his work in a context greater than his eye. Dave, I really respect, admire, and am inspired by your vision and your photography. To those of you not yet familiar with his work, I highly recommend looking through his stream. If you get a sense of why his work is something so much more than a beautiful image, maybe let me know, because I don't think I have quite figured it out!

Yesterday was the Santa Claus parade. Of course if it was snowing a tad, it would be perfect, but for comfort the weather was lovely. I walked around with a jean jacket, and it wasn't until I started off home was it getting a bit cold.
This is when I start thinking about gifts and what to give people next month. I will be again avoiding malls, if I can help it, and this year I'll try my darndest to buy from local artists and crafters. Bring on the fairs!

Blog Guelph: Imprisoned in Cortona
Made in Guelph - Molly MotMot / Karen Brodie
I am happy to feature the work of Karen Brodie today, and more specifically, a set of images from her recent trip to Italy. She has a number of really interesting images, but today is just Italy as a way to showcase a defined set of work. Karen's work is fun. Really really fun. I don't know Karen personally, but when I view her images I can almost hear the laugh that must have escaped before she saw her subjects. Her work has the feel of someone who actively seeks out the fun, the irony, the jokes, the humour, and the pleasure in the environments and the moments she experiences. Many of her images are certainly emotionally lighter than a lot of other photographers, but that doesn't make her work any less impactful or emotive. Karen seems to find the warm moments and interactions between herself and the world, subject and the environment, and ultimately viewer and the image. She has an incredibly sensitive eye that captures some really powerful images. This selection of images from her Italy set really showcase her range, particularly in her ability to animate the inanimate, but most in her ability to weave what she felt into her images. She also has a number of fantastic landscapes, macros, and street photographs that I would encourage you to check out. So Karen, thank you for using your photography to immortalize the funny moments and quirky twists, your work is both refreshing and inspiring.

The sky these days has been something else, and these six photos show just how fantastic we have it right now.
Checking the weather brought possible wet flurries this morning. I'll take the dark clouds and crazy skies without that, thank you!

I am pleased to introduce Mark Weymouth to those who may not know his work. Mark is one of the most acute and sensitive users of selective focus I have seen in quite some time. His LensBaby work is incredibly strong, without traces of gimmicks and tricks, and he throws those focal planes like slack rope. When I look at his work I don't get a sense the Mark is simply using his widest apertures, or his LensBaby, it really seems like his choice of focus was really chosen by the scene itself. The focus becomes part of the narrative, where it folds both time and feeling right into the image. The movement within his image, and the transition through the gradations of focus is absolutely seamless. Maybe what really strikes me the most is that Mark uses focus to produce utterly silent images, there is no chatter, no extraneous noise, no dissonance, just settled, peaceful, confident, and powerfully silent images. Mark, I am really inspired by your work and I will look to calm my images in the same way to you have. He also has some remarkable hardfocus images, some beautiful waterfall shots, and some amazing climbing pictures that I would really suggest you check out.

The extra hour of sleep this morning was needed, and to wake up with light and puffy pink clouds was something I didn't expect. What a weekend! The wind was crazy on Saturday, but it did die down for the Trick or Treaters, and I think every leaf has been blown off the trees in the backyard. Our neighbour's tree has been holding onto the leaves like no other, and this weekend was the last straw.
I have a recipe for you today! It's something I tried last night. The brick of tofu that I thought would become a curry recipe became fried and dipped into a peanut sauce. I have a new favourite tofu recipe!
