Blog Guelph: Goose on the Frozen Eramosa River

Today is a loosey goosey series of nine posts.

We've got a contest, some news - albeit slightly old - but still interesting - at least it's still interesting to me - so I do hope it's interesting to you - (Sue feels guilty for not posting said news when it was new news, but she'll get over it - eventually) - right then - we also have a new blogger to meet and greet, and a new photographer - PetricPix with this terrific image.

Walking Goose: "Hey, who the hell is following me?"

Enjoy.

Blog Guelph: Eramosa and Speed River Bend

next month 1201, originally uploaded by blairware.

The open water is likely a pretty even mix of Eramosa River (arriving into Guelph via Rockwood and Eden Mills) and the Speed River (coming through the north end of Guelph, past the River Run Centre and under our covered bridge).

Many people don't notice or regard our two lovely rivers at all. As water becomes more of an issue for our city, I hope that our waterway appreciation meter notches up and our sense of stewartship improves.

Blog Guelph: Eramosa River Bank

DSCN7603, originally uploaded by scratchedcornea.

I've canoed the Eramosa River on numerous occasions, usually on Good Friday when the water is running high, often after putting in at Rockwood followed by a picnic stop around Eden Mills. Often there will be a dozen boats in our flotilla. We're always carefully equipped with dry bags and first aid.

Thanks to Scratched Cornea for this wintery image.

Blog Guelph: Covered Bridge Panoramic

Two Word Wednesdays, originally uploaded by Denim.

Today's photos are all panoramas of various Guelph locations by photo artist and camera buff Denim.

Here's what she has to say about herself.

"I love images and whether they're digital or film, it doesn't matter. I love experimenting with film. Mostly I use medium format or polaroid film cameras, but I am not afraid to say that digital is in my life. Generally I try to say where film is used and then the rest is digital (but sometimes not)."

Blog Guelph: Special Interest Groups

IMG_5547, originally uploaded by vaneramos.

Over the course of my twenty five years as a resident in the city of Guelph, I've heard a million negative references to 'Special Interest Groups' by the powers that were. As a member of several dozen of these dreaded collectives I often wondered why my interest and ability to focus in on the details of our community weren't valued. After all, beauty is in the details - or so we're told.

Sue Richards

Besides having a 'special interest' photography vaneramos clearly loves our natural environment. This is the Eramosa River.

Blog Guelph: Paddling At The Confluence

Our Enchanted Garden supplies this lovely example of canoeing in the heart of the city. Here the lazy Speed and Eramosa rivers meet.

The sculpture on the right was commissioned to commemorate the women engineering students who were killed in Montreal a dozen years ago.

Blog Guelph: Red Canoe

red chain, originally uploaded by vw-busman.

Should you be inspired to paddle the cool rivers of hot Guelph, canoe rentals are available at the bottom of the Gordon Street hill by the Boat House Cafe beside the river. No hauling, portaging or wrangling required. Simply hand the nice people some of your money and you're on you way to becoming one with nature and at peace with the world.

This photo comes to us by way of vw-busman (check out his blog in the sidebar) and the friendly folks at Flickr. Click the pic for more.
