Blog Guelph: art in guelph
It appears to be Art Week on Blog Guelph with today's post taking a look at the old/new notion of a Guelph Community Arts Centre.
An organization, indeed a space, for multidisciplinary arts has been a dream of many for a long long time in the town that is literally busting at the seams with talent.
Now I realize there is no sense lamenting this dead ol' dog but wouldn't the Old Post Office have been a superb location for such a dream? Sigh.
Nevermind, the subject has reared it's gorgeous head again with a meeting set to discuss every and all possibilities.
Read more about it here
Click on the next 5 pics to see just a handful of examples of found art in this great town.
I will be doing my promogurl thing about FOOD next week. In the meantime, click on the pretty green link directly to you right to get your tummy rumbling.....
till then,
-Downtown Lynn-

Blog Guelph: Portrait of an Artist - Before
This man is Greg Denton. Likely you have seen him on a stage with his band Dry Tickle. Or maybe you participated in or attended his visual art show, Anyone Lived. You may have heard his voice on CFRU.FM 93.3, bought a book from him at Macondo or vicariously dined with him in one of Guelph's restaurants.
As part of today's news, Greg offers us his very personal sign of spring. Please proceed to the next blog post .....

Blog Guelph: The Life & Death of William Shakespeare

Guelph Artist Nick Craine is in the midst of creating a new graphic novel - with William Shakespeare as the central character. The above panels are an example of his effort and the following excerpt is part of Nick's artist statement.
The decision to depict Will’s life as a graphic novel has become a guiding principal of the piece. Will Shakespeare was working in the gutter of the arts in his own time. His decision to work in the theatre was not a passive act of whimsy. Rather, theatre was his entry point to survival. Having no standing in the world and no interest in following in his fathers’ footsteps, the theatre allowed him to capitalize on his most valuable asset-- his wit. Secondly, it allowed him to foster his rich internal life. In exchange for this safe harbor, Will elevated the medium from disposable pop to meaningful complex structure and eventually masterpiece. The comic book is the artistic gutter of our times. To portray Will’s life inside a comic strip narrative makes the telling itself a relentless artistic action. Using the basic vernacular of comics I insert complex narrative structures and call on different modes of visual depiction to create a meaningful portrayal – in essence sculpting high art out of bubble gum. The action subverts expectations and parallels Will’s own experiences.Join Nick this evening at The Shakespeare Made In Canada Festival's Opening Reception where he will be unveiling the 24 page excerpt of the 300 page graphic novel"Parchment of Light: The Life and Death of William Shakespeare".

Blog Guelph: Guelph Breast Gift Guide
Given Guelph is the birth place of topfree Ontario - thanks to Gwen Jacob's famous July 19th, 1991 shirt-less walk down Gordon Street - it is no wonder that Guelph is the publishing base of the Breast of Canada calendar.
If you are keen to offer your breast friend an educational and beautiful gift this year, consider popping into Macondo Books, the Bookshelf, On the Verge or Community Roots Collective to pick up a copy. Or - should you be reading this post in say - New Zealand - and you'd like to get one on the next flight out go to www.breastofcanada.com and go to the order page.
Guaranteed to inspire conversation - Christmas dinner just got more engaging.

Blog Guelph: Glass Quilt
As I type this post the sun is making an effort to squeeze through the clouds. Still, Blog Guelph will splash some colour into today's posts just in case grey skies prevail and spirits need to be lifted.
The Glass Guild of Guelph have been quilting - with glass. This piece was created by 23 of their members as part of the 175th Anniversary of Guelph. The Guild is located in Old Quebec Street on the 2nd level.
This very sharp photo was taken by dezsö. Check out his photography show now up at the Red Brick Cafe on Douglas Street in downtown Guelph.

Blog Guelph: Guelph Jazz Festival

How lucky for Blog Guelph and Jazz loving Guelphites (or non-Guelphites) everywhere. Jazz guy Tim Posgate has posted this promise on his blog.
"I am going to focus on previewing and reporting live from the Guelph Jazz Festival for the next five days. Usually in this space you can count on a stream of consciousness type journal ranging from kids to hockey to music, music and more music. I will try to "keep with the program" until the festival is over.(hopefully as the weekend progresses I will have some recorded interviews on my podcast.)"

Blog Guelph: Comic Artists
Perhaps there's something in our water but it's my impression that comic artists and illustrators are thick in Guelph. (Not thick like dense, thick like plentiful.)Take Nick Crane for example. His clever illustrations are making their way into fine magazines like Dogs in Canada.
Or consider Scott Moody and Gareth Lind, both prolific talents that are getting serious recognition for their work.
Heck Seth and his cats call G-town home. And wouldn't you know, the Canadian Comic Art Centre claims Guelph at it's headquarters.

Blog Guelph: Contemporary Dance Festival

Moving right along into Guelph festival season, we have the Guelph Contemporary Dance Festival starting up June 1.
I'm thinking this might be number 8 for the foot loose fest, now moved to the more civilied weather month of June instead of it's previous date in April. Dance events take place around the city including weekend performances in the downtown gem of a green space, Exhibition Park.

The Potters Market II
I did not purchase anything this year, but do own a show-stopping piece from this artist, purchased at last year's first annual. Guelph based Melissa Farquhar, owner of Quintessential Clay has an eye for colour choice and a design sensibility that can only be described as 'fine'.
Despite the family crowd, potty talk flowed between clay smiths and crowd making for a fun and funny time.

Blog Guelph: The Potters' Market
The second annual Potters' Market is this weekend, May 27 and 28; 10am to 5pm, rain or shine at Goldie Mill, 75 Cardigan Street, Guelph.
And what a stunning event it will be if last years fest was the template to be followed.
The 'blindfolded' potter competition was thrilling. Who could 'throw' the most mugs race won the hearts of all who attended. The sheer number of displays will make your visa card take on a life of its own.
It is certainly worth the drive.
