Blog Guelph: A Very Blue Guelph Lake

Guelph Lake 3, originally uploaded by Andrew Faires.

Yesterday it was black and white. Today it's blue.

Yessireebob! You get a 12 pack of blue fotos in your Wednesday blog box, along with a couple tidbits of non-news, some soft news and one piece of breaking news to chew on for the day.

Here we have the lake-that-was-a-river, our lovely and seemingly oh-so-blue Guelph Lake. Of course you can enjoy biking around the lake, camping on the shore or diving right in. And you can play on it. The Guelph Rowing Club has a new location and clubhouse and the Guelph Community Boating Club - a co-op don'tcha know- have started Tuesday Race Nights.

So then ~ be anything BUT blue as you enjoy today's selection of talented photographers and their rendition of the blues. Click the pics.

Blog Guelph: Hillside Festival Aftermath

Photo Credit: Aris P. ~ For more images by this photographer, please click the pic and visit their Flickr account.

I've just checked out one of the Hillside Groups Discussions on Facebook.

From what I read, if the number of Facebook folks who tried to purchase tickets but were unable to due to technical difficulties are representative of the larger draw - there must be many frustrated people out there.

The reality is, Hillside cannot grow - islands venues are restrictive in that way. But speaking as an experienced festival starter, and seeing just how festival friendly Guelph is, starting ANOTHER festival is certainly within this communities reach and ability.

Blog Guelph: Guelph Lake

Guelph Lake, originally uploaded by Sue Richards.

Today's series of six posts provides you with the a soup to nuts quality of experiences the average Guelphite can enjoy in February.

Walking, skiing and snow-shoeing on Guelph Lake on a sunny day is a cheap and very cheerful escape.

Blog Guelph: Guelph Lake Ice Fishing

Guelph Lake Ice Fishing 2, originally uploaded by sundog22.

I spent much of my youth sitting in my dad's fish hut out on Georgian Bay, trying to be quiet - waiting for a fish to strike.

There's a zen like quality to the dark cave of a fish hut. Should you be interested in having the experience, the huts on Guelph Lake can be rented through the Guelph Lake Conservation Authority. Click here for details.

It has finally reached a seasonally appropriate temperature in Guelph. With the weather acting all crazy like, it's anyone's guess how long we'll be in Chillyville. But eventually Guelph Lake will freeze over and we'll be able to go skating.

Blog Guelph: Manufactured Landscapes

Guelph Lake 8101023, originally uploaded by blairware.

In the Guelph International Film Festival featured film Manufactured Landscapes, photographer Edward Burynsky's large scale photographs of how China's industrial revolution in severely modifying the natural landscape left me both enthralled and deeply disturbed. The film is coming to the Bookshelf in early December. I highly encourage you to attend.

Guelph Lake is our own very small-scale version of a manufactured landscape thanks to the construction of the Guelph Lake dam in 1974. Photographer Blairware captures an idyllic impression with this shot. Yet prior to 1974, this landscape hosted a farm and the Speed River.

Blog Guelph: Guelph Lake

/crystal.clear, originally uploaded by glenn.afalla.

Ideally, water should be protected at the source. According to the Source Water Protection website, "the proposed Clean Water Act would play a major role in ensuring that all Ontarians have access to safe drinking water. Protecting water at its source is the first step in ensuring safe drinking water. It means stopping contaminants from getting into sources of drinking water -- lakes, rivers and aquifers."

Go here to find out more about the Clean Water Act.

Blog Guelph: Guelph Lake Sunset

IMG_0835, originally uploaded by personality_dialysis.

Taken on Hillside weekend, this image by photographer 'personality dialysis' offers a glimpse of the perfect solution to sticky summer weather in a very hot city. Despite the fact that the heat wave has moved on and the current temperature possesses that tiny hint of *fall* (GASP!) Guelph Lake Conservation Authority is a lovely destination for communing with nature anytime of year.

Blog Guelph: Rowing Club

_DSC4144
Originally uploaded by PictureTakinDevil.
Guelph Lake supports both a sailing and rowing club. Motorized boats are not allowed unless used for safety purposes...like being on hand at regattas and during training sessions.

The Guelph Rowing Club has grown by leaps and bounds over the last couple of years. You can take a Learn-to-Row program, join the Recreation Program, train for competition, own your own boat, use club boats or do it all.

PictureTakinDevil took this photo of a Guelph Club eight. (4 oars on either side) Click on his pic to see great shots of the clubs recent regatta.

Blog Guelph: Canoes

Canoes
Originally uploaded by stingrayz08.
Canoeheads are plentiful in Guelph. Depending on the time of year (which dictates how much water flows through the rivers), canoeing into Guelph from the village Rockwood, or out of the city to the town of Hespeler is relatively easy. Tooling around on the stretch east of Gordon Street is pretty much possible all year long.

Of course there's always paddling possibilities at Guelph Lake provided you keep out of the way of rowing teams and crazy sailors.

Photo by stingrayz08 posted on Flickr. But you knew that.

Blog Guelph: Skating On Guelph Lake

You know when you get put on hold after answering a dozen phone prompts, and you end up listening to some pop music from the 80's that is suppose to help you pass the time until a real person shows up?

Well, hopefully, this won't be like that.

Rather, while we get the site ready and I muster up some steam to start banging the Guelph blogging bush, I'll post some Guelph photos so that should you stop by for a visit, you'll have something Guelphish to appreciate.

This photo was taken Sunday March 5th at Guelph Lake. Several of us arranged a day of wild, rogue skating and picnicking. This is the second under the table photo in a series of two.
