Blog Guelph: Orangeness - Begging Bear

Begging Bear, originally uploaded by Mary Calarco.

More Orangeness Day pics arrived in the Guelph Flickr Pool after I had got out for the day. I'm delighted to see that Guelph's Most Famous Bear got into the spirit.

Blog Guelph: Pssst..Guess What?

Pssst..Can you Keep A Secret?, originally uploaded by stingrayz08.

Good News! The blogging issues of the past couple of days have been repaired! Photoblogging continues......

Today's series is loosely based on the faces of Guelph.

These heads are part of a much larger sculpture at the Donald Forster Sculpture Park at the Macdonald Stewart Art Centre on the corner of Gordon and College Streets.

Thanks to Stingrayz for zoning in on this scene.

Blog Guelph: The Life & Death of William Shakespeare

Guelph Artist Nick Craine is in the midst of creating a new graphic novel - with William Shakespeare as the central character. The above panels are an example of his effort and the following excerpt is part of Nick's artist statement.
The decision to depict Will’s life as a graphic novel has become a guiding principal of the piece. Will Shakespeare was working in the gutter of the arts in his own time. His decision to work in the theatre was not a passive act of whimsy. Rather, theatre was his entry point to survival. Having no standing in the world and no interest in following in his fathers’ footsteps, the theatre allowed him to capitalize on his most valuable asset-- his wit. Secondly, it allowed him to foster his rich internal life. In exchange for this safe harbor, Will elevated the medium from disposable pop to meaningful complex structure and eventually masterpiece. The comic book is the artistic gutter of our times. To portray Will’s life inside a comic strip narrative makes the telling itself a relentless artistic action. Using the basic vernacular of comics I insert complex narrative structures and call on different modes of visual depiction to create a meaningful portrayal – in essence sculpting high art out of bubble gum. The action subverts expectations and parallels Will’s own experiences.
Join Nick this evening at The Shakespeare Made In Canada Festival's Opening Reception where he will be unveiling the 24 page excerpt of the 300 page graphic novel"Parchment of Light: The Life and Death of William Shakespeare".

Macdonald Stewart Art Centre - tonight (January 11) at 7:30 pm.

Blog Guelph: Stone Faced

Stone faced
Originally uploaded by aisha c..
I was picking my way through the MacStew Sculpture Park on my way to the Stephen Fearing concert last week when I found this sculpture. Instantly I thought of photos I'd seen posted on Flickr.

The heads are all similar, each facing slightly different directions, sitting on various levels in big rings. My first thought was "do people try to steal these?" Now I'm looking at the sculpture as an example of the various veiwpoints one person can have.

The whole shebang can be found on the University of Guelph campus.
